DETROIT -- The 2009 Movement (un)officially kicks off the start of summer over the Memorial Day weekend at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit. An electronic music festival that continues to grow in attendance since 2000, the event is an energetic feel-good time of techno and hip-hop, where the people of Detroit can come out to not only enjoy the weather, but also experience the hypnotic beat and dance to it as well as be their true selves.

"It's the 10th festival, next year will be the 10 year anniversary," said Jason Huvaere, Director of Movement 2009 and President of Paxahau. "Paxahau did a stage for the very first time in 2005. That was our first taste of the festival. In 2006, we were asked by the city of Detroit to produce the entire event. Since 2006, we've seen an increase in attendance. With our conversion into a ticket system, we're allowed to spend more money where it counts and that's on high-end artists and high-end production. We're still able to through their generosity keep the ticket prices very low compared to other festivals in the United States."

The line-up this year includes the Flying Lotus on the Red Bull Music Academy stage and the Adultnapper on the Beatport stage Monday afternoon, whom just came from doing a Las Vegas show the other day, and is now about tour across Europe this summer.

"I'm playing here and an afterparty, I played an afterparty last night," said artist Adultnapper who also goes by the name Francis Harris. "I have about 38 records out. They're just vinyl singles. I love Detroit. I love this festival. It's good energy. Seeing the people who are here for the music. It's refreshing. I'm glad to be here. I have a tour starting in the beginning of July. I have eight dates in Europe. So I'll be touring around Germany, the U.K., Spain, Italy. So that's the next big thing."

Also performed that evening was Afrikka Bambaataa on the Red Bull Music Academy. His single, "Planet Rock", was a modest success when it debuted on the charts in the early 1980s, but now it has become an classic on the techno, but the song also laid the groundwork for hip-hop and rap in the years ahead.

"We're having so much fun, this is great," said Amanda Snider, a festival goer. "The music, the people, it's just fun. It's a great day out too. It's beautiful. It's a great start for summer."

Paxahau continues to be in charge of producing the Movement since 2006, and an recent press release has announced Carl Craig, one of the legends in techno-pop, as its newest creative director. Tickets have gone up a bit from $20 to $30 for a day and $50 for its entirely, but still, you can't stop the Movement.

"I came here primarily to see Afrika Bambaataa," said Jim Deslierres, a festival goer from Ferndale. "Love to see the city pumping. As everybody knows, tough times in Detroit right now. I could afford the one-day splurge that's why we chose today."
