- Fourteen semi-trailers
are used to carry more than 75,000 yards of carpet for exhibits and
aisles at the auto show. It all the carpet was made 2 feet in width,
it would be 66 miles long. If an average house has 125 yards, all the
carpet at the auto show would be enough for 600 homes.
- Exhibits, lighting and
sound equipment take enough electricity to power a subdivision with
360 homes for 6 months.
- During the preparations,
over 1,500 carpenters, stagehands, electricians, Teamsters and ironworkers
work full time for 12-14 hour shifts some double that until the job
is complete.
- The total value of the
exhibits is over $200 million not counting the 700 automobiles that
will be on display. This year, there are more than 20 two-level exhibits
at the auto show.
- Two-level exhibits add
106,000 more sq. feet to Cobo Center. The main floor has 750,000 sq.
feet which adds up to 860,000 sq. feet of space for the auto show.
- Since the Charity Preview
started back in 1976, over $32 million has been riased for children's
charities in Detroit. Last year, $6.125 million was raised during the
Charity Preview.
- The auto show was held
in other locations besides Cobo including the Michigan StateFairgrounds
and the Detroit Artillery Armory. It finally moved to its current home,
Cobo Center in 1965.
