For the second year in a row, I will be LIVE at the Press Week and Industry Preview days of the 2004 North American International Auto Show at Cobo Center in Downtown Detroit, MI.
Every year, the Detroit Auto Show proves to get better and better. It all started back in 1907 when the first Detroit Auto Show was held. The 2004 Auto Show will be the 16th year it's considered an "international" event. It will be the 88th Detroit Auto Show. Ever since it started in 1907, over 850 concept cars have been unveiled.
Last year, Ford unveiled the new 427, Freestyle FX and the Model U. They redesigned their popular F-150 truck. They also introduced a new Mustang at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show.
General Motors introduced a whole bunch of cars in the 2003 Detroit Auto Show. WIthin the GM brand itself, they unveiled the Hy-Wire hydrogen car. Chevrolet introduced the Cheyenne truck and the SS sport utility vehicle. Buick showed the Centieme and Pontiac had the G6.
Last year's public attendance was 810,699 people. That is up about 50,000 from the 759,907 people who attended in 2001. There were 6,735 people from the media at last year's auto show compared to 6,000 in the year before.
2004 New Car Introductions
Aston Martin is making a world debut of their new DB9 Volante at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show. It will be the 13th convertible from the British automaker. The convertible top opens in only 17 seconds after you press the button. This car will be in the dealerships by the spring of 2004.
Audi is going to unveil their new A8L 6.0 at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show. It has a 450-horsepower W12 engine. This new sedan can go from 0 to 60 in about five seconds. It will be selling in europe at the beginning of 2004 and it will be in America in 2005.
BMW is going to premiere it's 6-Series Cabriolet this year at Cobo Center. It is a sport convertible with a 4.4-liter V8 engine. It has seats for four people. This car has a verticle rear window and a top that goes up and down at 20 mph.
Chrysler is going to debut their new 300C. It is a huge sedan which will be replacing the Concorde and 300M. There will be a selction of engines for this vehicle including a HEMI V8. Chrysler will also show off it's new PT Cruiser convertible and a Crossfire roadster.
Dodge will be unveiling their new Slingshot concept car. This is a sportscar that reaches 45 miles on the gallon. Dodge will also show off their new Magnum sport wagon and possibly a new Dakota.
Ferrari is making a world debut of their new 612 Scaglietti. It is going to replace the 456M. The trunk is 25% larger than the other car. The name "612" is from the 6.0-liter V12 engine that it has.
Ford's theme for the 2004 Detroit Auto Show is "The Year of the Car." They are going to show off six new cars at Cobo Center this year. They will have the new Freestyle, which debuted at last year's auto show. In addition, the Five Hundred sedan and the new Mustang. They will display their Ford GT production vehicle.
General Motors will have two new concepts and three production vehicles. First, they will unveil their new Pontiac G6 which debuted at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show. They will show off a new Chevrolet Corvette to celebrate the sixth generation of the car.
Hyundai is going to debut a new concept sprots car. It is named the HCD8 and it is a two-door sportscar. This car was created at the Hyundai California Design team in Irvine, California.
Infinity is going to showing off their new QX56 SUV at Cobo Center this year. It is similar to the Nissan Pathfinder. This SUB has a 5.6-liter V8 engine that makes 315 horsepower. It has enough space to seat eight people. The QX56 is going to be the first Infiniti vehicle built in America.
Jeep will unveil their new Rescue SUV. It is similar to GM's Hummer H1. Jeep is going to make a North American debut with their new Jeep Treo. It has fuel-cell technology on the wheels and it's an electric car.
Kia is going to debut two new cars at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show. Those are the Spectra and the KCV-III Concept. The Spectra will be producted and the Kia hasn't decided yet on producing the KCV-III concept.
Lexus is also going to unveil two new cars this year. They will be the GS and the RX 330 Hybrid. The GS will run off gasoline and electricity.
Mercury is going to show off their new Mariner SUV. It is similar to the new 2005 Ford Escape. Lincoln will have two new cars at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show as well.
