PHOTO BY JASON RZUCIDLO / AMERICAJR.com This is the new Hybrid Transmission used by General Motors.
Aaron is a product specialist from General Motors. He said that GM will begin producing alternative energy vehicles by the year 2010. They will have a mass production at that time. He told me about the new Chevy Silverado extended cab. It is a hybrid truck that can come in two-wheel drive or in four-wheel drive. The Silverado hybrid has been available for three years in the Detroit market. It will now be available in all 50 states. The Silverado hybrid will give you a 10% savings in fuel costs. It has a alternator generator starter mechanism that is located between the engine and the transmission. Keep in mind that this isn't a full hybrid. The energy is stored under the second row of seating. There are electrical outlets on the second row of seats and in the bed of the truck. When the battery runs down, the automobile will automatically start and begin charging it. It is a lead acid battery. It will also be recharged by braking. What is the fuel savings? If you get the two-wheel drive version, you will get 18 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. If you choose the four-wheel drive version, you will get 17 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. It comes to a 2 mpg savings. When you are at a stop sign or red light, the gas engine turns off. When you put your foot on the pedal, the gas engine starts again. This feature will help to save gasoline that is normally wasted during a stop. What can you expect to pay for a Chevy Silverado hybrid? It can cost anywhere from $29,135 to $35,205 for the high-end model.
