2006 NAIAS :: Reviews and Interviews Chevy debuts the Tahoe dual-mode Hybrid
PHOTO BY JASON RZUCIDLO / AMERICAJR.com Chevrolet unveils the new Tahoe hybrid at NAIAS 2006.
Carl Hillenbrand introducted me to the Chevy Tahoe. It seats six to nine people. It comes with a sleek design that is similar to the Chevy Suburban. The new Tahoe dual-mode Hybrid gets 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. The non-hybrid Tahoe is a 2 wheel drive. It has 320 horsepower. It has an active fuel management which shuts off cylinders. When it slows down, it charges the battery. It can use the new E85 fuel, which is 85% ethanol and 15% gas which runs cleaner. The new Chevy Tahoe hybrid offers a 25% better improvement in fuel economy. It comes with a Vortect V-8 engine. It is the first SUV with a two-mode hybrid system. There are two modes that you can drive your new Tahoe hybrid. One for driving in the city and one for driving on the highway. You can choose from: electric power only, engine power only or a combination of engine and electric power. The key to saving fuel is by leaving the gasoline-powereed engine off for a long time and operating with the electric power at a low speed. Tom Stephens said, "The Chevrolet Tahoe two-mode Hybrid combines the functionality and comfort of a full-size SUV with a two-mode full hybrid system that optimizes fuel efficiency in city and highway driving, the way most Americans use their vehicles." He is the group vice president of GM Powertrain. The warranty is good for 3-years, 36,000 miles. The spark plugs can be changed after 100,000 miles. There is no tune up, just change the oil when indicator light on dash comes on. The Chevy Tahoe will be available for sale in 2007.
