DETROIT
-- GEM,
a division of DiamlerChrysler, is showing off it's e2 neighborhood
vehicle in the basement of Cobo Center at the 2007 NAIAS.
The automobile is perfect for industrial complexes, construction
sites, college campuses, hotels, resorts and marinas.
The
e2 can hold two passengers. It has a maximum speed of 25 miles
with a range of 30 miles. It comes with a lead acid battery
that takes about six hours to recharge. It is also manufactured
with disc brakes. There are zero emissions because it is a
truly electric vehicle.
This
is not meant to be your first car. However, it can be a second
or third car. It's just a little car that you can use to transport
items to and from small areas. You can drive it down neighborhood
streets but it is not mean for the highway or surface streets.
All
of the windows in the vehicle are made of safety glass. It
will help to protect you in a dangerous place such as a construction
site. It is the same material that is used in safety glasses
that protect your eyes.
The
e2 also comes with three point safety belts. There are front
and rear turn signals, headlights, taillights and a horn.
It comes with most of the standard features you would elect
on an automobile. However, there is one drawback -- no AC.
There is heat but no air conditioning, sorry.
This
automobile can be charged by plugging a cord into your standard
110-volt outlet. The e2 receives over 200 mpg and consumes
120 watt hours per mile. It is twelve times more efficient
than your standard car.
There
are approximately 33,000 GEM vehicles on the road right now.
They are available at any Dodge, Chrysler or Jeep dealer.
The starting price is $6,795 for the base model of the e2.
