2006 NAIAS :: Auto Show Preview
AmericaJR.com is proud to bring you coverage of the 2006 North American International Auto Show. This will be our fourth year of covering this prestigious event on our website. We are excited in more ways than one.
Seven members of our web team will be attending Press Week (Jan 8-12, 2006). We will be taking pictures, conducting interviews and reviewing the new concept cars and production models. NEW This Year, we will be recording our LIVE Interviews and publishing them right here on our website for you to listen.
Last year, our auto show sponsor was Quizno's Subs. This year, we are sponsored by Wayne State University and The Hilberry Theatre. We encourage you to see "Electra" by Sophocles which will be playing from January 6 - March 23, 2006.
In 2005, we wrote eleven stories about the NAIAS. The Chrysler 300 took home the Car of the Year Award. The Ford Escape Hybrid won the Truck of the Year Awards. These awards are voted on by journalists in the automobile industry.
The 2005 Edition of the NAIAS featured 73 total exhibits. There was 68 vehicle introductions which includes concept cars and production models. The public attendance figures were 773,422 people. During the charity preview, 17,500 people attended and raised $7 million for local area charities. There was 6,897 members of the media attending the NAIAS including the AmericaJR.com Web Team.
What To Look For in 2006...

Find out if there is a backup or a crash en route to the NAIAS. For the first time ever, you will be able to listen to our LIVE Interviews. It's a concept we started at the Michigan International Speedway this past summer.
New to the auto show this year is the Eyes on Design Awards. They will be handed out on January 10th, the last day of Press Days. These awards will be given by the Detroit Institute of Opthalmology to the designers of concept and production model vehicles.
If you go to the auto show, look for more hybrid cars, hydrogen cars and automobiles that run on alternative energy. Automakers realize that the price of gas is high and they are doing their best on finding a solution. Mazda is going to display their all new hydrogen car, RX-8.
Nissan is planing to reveal their new entry-level car. It's being called the Versa. It will be assembled in Mexico and be prices around $12,000. It will have a 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine with 120-horsepower.
Ford is going to unveil the new Edge crossover sport utility vehicle. They are entering a brand new market with it. Think of it as a Freestyle that is an SUV. Ford will also display the Shelby GT500 convertible.
What is General Motors planning? Look for a new Cadillac Escalade ESV and the EXT sport utility vehicles. They've got others planned but we don't know what they are yet. Keep your eyes peeled...
DiamlerChrysler is going to make some big introductions. The Jeep Compass will be revealed. It is targeted to younger buyers with a very rounded shape. They will also debut the Dodge Caliber. It will replace the Neon and come with Chrysler's new four cylinder engine.
Look for the debut of a new automaker at NAIAS 2006. Geely is the first Chinese automaker to ever be displayed at the Detroit Auto Show. They are looking the enter the U.S. markey by 2008 or 2009. They will display the 7151 CK among others. Geely is a brand new automaker that began in 1986.
Do you have kids that are interested in cars or trucks at an early age. The 2nd Annual Automotive Education Day will take place on January 18th. Students from grades 8-12 will have the chance to visit the auto show and speak with the industry experts. They will also attend the career fair and have lunch at Cobo Center. On January 22nd, NBC Sports will once again feature a special program on the NAIAS. It will be a two-hour special that will display all of the new concept cars and production models. The broadcast will be hosted by NBC's Nascar team: Bill Weber, Benny Parsons, Allen Bestwick, Dave Burns and Marty Snider.
2006 is a big year for Detroit. In January, the North American International Auto Show at Cobo Center. In Feburary, Super Bowl XL makes Detroit its home at Ford Field. These two big events will bring over $1 billion into the Detroit economy.
