2008 NAIAS: Concept Cars Reviewed

by Sheila Franklin

DETROIT -- Wandering into the NAIAS, we couldn’t help notice that every year the cars resemble each other more. So we turned our attention towards the concept cars, the models that may never hit the streets, but certainly make you want to covet them nonetheless.

One of our first was the Mazda Taika. Very sleek, very modern, very silver. We just wonder how you change the tire on the thing and also if it was named in honor of Mr. Sulu, even if it is spelled with a slight difference.

This is the Buick Riviera concept. We couldn’t really see anything new or outstanding about this model, but we know that if a vehicle is spinning in a circle, it’s very special. Notice the grill, the opulence, the Chinese lettering on the back of the car. We have no doubt that should this concept become a reality, that won’t be on the final model.

BMW has a Hydrogen 7 Concept that takes away our idea of saving money. We dig the Beamers but they are becoming way too mid-size for our taste. Be that as it may, BMW will always have a fan base, even at a cost of $45,000 - $60,000.

While Mini Cooper's may always seem the same with a base price beginning at early $20,000's, they continue to improve in little ways. This light is part of the interior of the vehicle, bright enough to darken even the blackest of tunnels. There are so many options en toto on them that they might as well be a
perpetual concept.

Finally, another of the cars-to-be we were impressed by was the Saturn Flextreme Plug-in. Running on diesel, it can switch to electric power if the driver so desires. Look in the back and what appears to be training wheels is in fact two Segways. Push a button and they magically appear so that once you reach
your destination you can look even more foolish taking in the local sites. And we
figure that is as good an ending as you can get.
