DETROIT -- The North American International Auto Show 2008, like past shows, features some killer luxury cars, accompanied by some killer models, of the human kind. The Lamborghini exhibit comes to mind....and libido.... Mercedes and Maserati also strut their stuff with smashing sophistication. The Jaguar (or Jag-wire for we Michiganders) exhibit features beautiful Jags without the feline hood ornament this year. Apparently, a few people have been impaled by them, and Vlad is mad at the thievery of his Transylvanian thunder. There are still jaguars on the cars, just not so purr-fectly placed.... The Maserati exhibit was stunning. Usually I am not a big fan of tan or beige cars, but the beige Maserati Quattroporte Collezione Cento got me bad. It really had nothing to do with the young, sweet blonde lady who told me how fast it was; it sold itself. I sung that Joe Walsh lyric to her, and she remembered the song after I hit a few notes.... The Bentleys were regal and impressive, but since I am not a rich and famous modern artist just yet, I sort of forgot all about them. It was the end of the night for me and I guess I had sensory overload. Maybe Bentley needs some hotter models or something. Baby Spice would be nice! Chip! Chip! But with global warming, dwindling natural resources, my love of polar bears and panda bears and caribou, too, I do not want to merely write an article in praise of conspicuous consumption. Many auto manufacturers nobly introduced new hybrid models that were simply stunning. The Saturn Aura comes to mind--it is a must-see presentation with natural vistas projected onto the car! And, speaking of nice, young ladies at auto exhibits, you really should say hi to Ms. Wei Wei Sun, or in China, Ms. Sun Wei Wei, and see The Detroit Fish by Li Shi Guang Ming Automotive Design Co., Ltd. It is downstairs in The Michigan Room. It is a Chinese electric car that seats five and goes 45 mph. It is perfect for a nation of 1.3 billion people who need clean air to live full and healthy lives. A trip to the auto show is not complete if you skip the basement!
