DETROIT -- I talked with Russ Smolik from Smart Marketing. The Smart car is part of the Mercedes-Benz market in the Daimler-Benz family. This vehicle has a 3-cylinder, 1 liter, 70 hp engine. It runs on purely gas with 33 mpg for city driving and 41 mpg on the highway. "This is the highest gas mileage for any car on the world's roads today," said Russ Smolik of Smart U.S.A. The Smart Pure starts at $10,590. The Smart Passion starts at $13,590. The high-end Smart Passion Convertible starts at $16,590. The warranty is 2-year and 24,000 miles, which is controlled by the government in Europe. You have an added option of purchasing a 5 year and 60,000 mile warranty for an additional $399. The unique feature on this vehicle is it has removable plastic panels. If you need a new color, $1,000 buys you new color panels. Also if you get in an accident, you just change the panel. The assembly plant is in Hambach, France which is on the border of Germany. The safety system is the same as on Mercedes-Benz models. This vehicle is sold in 37 countries. "There are 800,000 Smart cars on the road around the world," said Smolik. Only
about 100 in the U.S. But they are fixing to change that.
