Three New Hotels are Set to Open in Time for the 2009 NAIAS PHOTO BY JASON RZUCIDLO / ©AMERICAJR.com The Fort Shelby Hotel is in the process of renovation. It will reopen as a DoubleTree Guest Suites hotel in December.
DETROIT -- When the glitz and glamour of the 2009 North American Auto Show comes to Detroit, the Motor City will be ready. A total of 1,059 new hotel rooms will be available for the national and international media as well as people from all over the country who wish to see Detroit's annual signature event. The Westin Book Cadillac Hotel, Fort Shelby DoubleTree Guest Suites, and the Greektown Casino Hotel will all be open for business by January. In late 2007, the permanent hotels for MGM Grand Detroit and Motor City Casino opened their doors. The Book Cadillac Hotel was developed by three brothers who wanted to turn Washington Boulevard into a Fifth Avenue of Detroit. Construction began in 1923 and was completed in December 1924. At 31 stories high, it was the tallest building in Detroit and the tallest hotel in the world at the time. The Book Cadillac cost $14 million to build. It was renamed the Sheraton-Cadillac Hotel in 1951 and later the Radisson-Cadillac Hotel in 1976. The Westin Book Cadillac Hotel will reopen on October 6, 2008 with 455 newly renovated hotel rooms. It will also feature 67 luxury condominiums and penthouses that have already been sold. The Grand Ballroom was renovated and renamed the Venetian Ballroom. The Italian Garden is restored to it's original state. A ten story parking garage has also been added. The original opening date was scheduled for October 1 but there was some last-minute construction that had to be completed. A large grand opening celebration is planned for October 25, 2008. The Fort Shelby Hotel first opened its doors in 1916. It is 22 stories high with a basement floor, giving it 23 total floors. Albert Kahn designed the building's addition that took place in 1927. The hotel was renamed the Pick-Fort Shelby in 1951 after being bought out by the Albert Pick Hotels chain. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The DoubleTree Guest Suites Fort Shelby Hotel will reopen on December 31, 2008 with 204 newly renovated hotel rooms. It will also feature 67 apartments on the upper floors. The hotel will also include a conference center, the finn & porter full-service restaurant with lounge, fitness center and concierge. The Greektown Casino Hotel is a completely new hotel being built on the eastern side of the Greektown district of Detroit. It will feature a 30-story hotel with 400 rooms and an attached parking garage. A 25,00 square foot convention center is being included. A 1,200-1,500 seat theatre is also part of the hotel. It is scheduled to hold its grand opening on early January 2009. A new 13-story, 3,500 space parking garage is already in operation for guests. The temporary casino will continue to operate until the permanent hotel opens. Additional gaming space is being built over Lafayette to bring total gaming space to 100,000 square feet.
