New version of the Toyota Matrix unveiled at NAIAS PHOTO BY JASON RZUCIDLO / ©AMERICAJR.com The Toyota Matrix is a 5-door hatchback on display at the 2008 NAIAS.
DETROIT -- The Toyota Matrix is based off the best-selling Corolla platform. It is a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors. The GM version of this car is the Pontiac Vibe. Both vehicles are known as sport wagons. The Matrix that is on display at the auto show was redesigned for the 2009 model year. Consumers will be able to get their hands on this vehicle in February of this year. A price has not been announced for this automobile yet. However, last year's version cost between $19,000 and $24,000. "It's made in California," said Jill Decker, a Toyota product specialist. "It's very cargo versatile. The front passenger seats fold down. A 150V outlet in the front console. Great fuel economy." A hybrid version of this vehicle is not being considered at this time. It comes with a 1.8 liter 4-cylinder engine or a sporty 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine for the higher end model. The 1.8 liter engine has fuel economy ratings of 25 for the city and 31 on the highway. The 2.4 liter model comes with fuel economy ratings of 21 and 29 respectively. Addional features include the capability to play MP3s. It also offers hands-free phone capability with bluetooth technology. GPS is an option, but it comes with an additional charge. "It's a youth marketed vehicle. It sells well in retired mid range," Decker said. Check out the Toyota Matrix while you're at the auto show. It's a cool car for a college student. It also offers a 150V electrical outlet in the front console. I can't think how many times I want to plug in a portable TV or other electronic device in my car. This really helps for those who have to travel long distances from work to home. You can now brew coffee in your car!
