2009 Tesla Roadster Sport electric vehicle unveiled at NAIAS PHOTO BY JEROME RZUCIDLO / ©AMERICAJR.com The 2009 Tesla Roadster Sport is on display at Cobo Center.
DETROIT -- Tesla Motors is a U.S. company founded in June 2003 in San Carlos, California by two engineers from the Silicon Valley. Doreen Allen, National Salesperson, says the Tesla Roadster Sport went into production in the Spring of 2008. It is a 100 percent electric vehicle. The EPA is a cycled program which determines its miles per charge. The range is 244 miles combined city/highway on a single charge. You can plug it in a 110 or 220 outlet. It is powered by lithium ion cells. The base price is $109,000 and has a carbon fiber body which is stronger than fiberglass so it doesn't rust. It can go 0-60 in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 125 miles per hour. The car is a Roadster and a two-seater. It is rear-wheel drive with sport seating and LED tail lights. They are designing a sedan for 2011. The vehicle has zero emissions so its great for the environment. Allen says: "It's the only car in its class in production as a sports car." It only takes overnight or eight hours to charge and the cost is $4 to $7 per day in electricity. Currently there are two dealer/sales stores in California with additions in Chicago, New York City, Miami and Seattle in the near future.
