2010 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) show floor expected to be completely full PHOTO BY JASON RZUCIDLO / ©AMERICAJR.com A look at the Cadillac display from the 2009 North American International Auto Show.
DETROIT -- Many automakers who left the 2008 and 2009 North American International Auto Shows are expected to return to the 2010 show this January. The automakers backed out of the show in previous years due to a lack of exhibit space. The green light has been given to upgrade Cobo Center so now automakers are coming back to show off their new concept cars and production models right here in the Motor City. Nissan, Mitsubishi, Ferrari, Suzuki, Porsche and Infiniti did not display their vehicles at the auto show last January due to a lack of space inside Cobo Center. Since the venue will be upgraded, many of the automakers will be returning to the NAIAS in 2010. Porsche has confirmed that it is coming to the Motor City this January with an exhibit. Sources say the auto show floor will be completely full. Renovations are already underway at Cobo Center. Crews are working to complete $3 million in repairs by this January. Repairs will be made to the leaking roof and the outdated loading docks in the rear of the building as well as the landscaping and electrical upgrades. A regional authority officially took control of Cobo Center in September after the Detroit City Council decided not to veto the move. A $288 million expansion is planned to be complete for the 2011 show. Since Chrysler has recently partnered with Fiat, it is possible that some Fiat vehicles may be located next to the Chrysler display. Will the 2010 NAIAS see its first Indian carmaker? India's Mahindra & Mahindra is looking to sell its sport utility vehicles and trucks in America. It may end up with exhibit space in Detroit this January. That has not been confirmed or denied yet. New electric vehicle maker "Think" has confirmed to AmericaJR.com that it will have an exhibit at the 2010 NAIAS. It will showcase its "City" electric vehicle as well as some other models. The Norwegian automaker has recently opened an office in Dearborn, Mich. and hopes to start selling its electric vehicles in America next year. India's Tata Motors, which owns Jaguar and Land Rover, is not expected to have exhibit space at the show. However, Jaguar and Land Rover will have exhibit space. This is the first year that GM will be without Saturn and maybe even without Saab if the Swedish brand's new owners finalize their purchase agreement. At least one Chinese automaker will be showing off its vehicles at the NAIAS in January. BYD, which has displayed at the Detroit show for the last two years, is expected to return in 2010.
