Take the People Mover to Get Around Downtown Detroit Quickly PHOTO BY JASON RZUCIDLO / ©AMERICAJR.com Visitors and members of the media are encouraged to ride the Detroit People Mover during the 2010 North American International Auto Show.
DETROIT -- When you come to Detroit for the North American International Auto Show, be sure to park your car and take the Detroit People Mover. It's the fastest way to get around downtown Detroit. There are 13 People Mover stations around a 2.9-mile loop around the downtown district. If you choose to park your car at the Greektown Casino, it's only a 9-minute ride to get to Cobo Center, where the auto show is being held. "The People Mover is the elevated rail system that serves downtown Detroit," said Ericka Alexander, marketing specialist of the DPM. "We cover about 2.9 miles of the central business district. It hits all the important venues, hotspots, government facilities, as well as servicing a lot of businesses downtown." The People Mover is not just for business people. Regular folks can get a bite to eat and catch a Red Wings game or a Tigers game. "Absolutely, it's a stick around downtown kind of means of transportation," Alexander said. "People can really come down here and make a day out of it. Kids love our system. They love to ride it. It's a very family-oriented type service. We have our art in the stations people can admire while they're here. We always say the adventure begins when you get on the People Mover; not when you get downtown. It's the gateway to more fun and adventure." The hours of operation for the People Mover will be extended during the 2010 North American International Auto Show. "During the public days, the People Mover will be open generally from about 6:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday to midnight," Alexander said. "On Fridays, it opens until 2:00 a.m. Saturday will open from 8 o'clock to 2 a.m. On Sunday, it will open at 8 o'clock as well until midnight. Press preview will be the same because it opens on a Monday. For press preview, we will be open from 6:30 a.m. to midnight." The People Mover will be running until 2 a.m. on the night of the auto show charity preview, Friday, January 15. "Friday night is a really big night for us," Alexander explained. "We love seeing everyone get on in their tuxedos and evening gowns. It's just a really great time to raise funds for important charities in Detroit. We'll be open until 2 a.m." Each ride on the Detroit People Mover is 50 cents. However, a monthly pass is available for purchase at www.thepeoplemover.com. Currently, a monthly pass is being offered for only $10, a savings of half off the regular price. "There is a monthly pass available," the marketing specialist said. "It's $20, you get unlimited rides from the first to the last of the month. Most people think it's a convenient way to travel without having to use change. You can either use change or a token." Alexander said the Detroit People Mover is very safe. There are security cameras at all stations and transit officers ride on certain trains throughout the day. "The People Mover is an extremly safe system," she said. "We keep it very well-lit, clean. The transit officers are always out patrolling. They're always out there willing to help. They're on trains, on foot, they're also at the stations and frequently you can find them by bike or traveling by our People Mover train." There are five two-car trains running on the People Mover. The average wait time is three minutes between each train. "It's not a long wait at all," Alexander explained. "People usually enjoy waiting around. By the time they finish having a good conversation, another train has come. It takes about three minutes." The People Mover is also a great option for parking your car and getting over to a Red Wings game. "I think people should come on down and experience it for themselves and give downtown a chance to shine," the marketing specialist said. "They can do anything from taking in the ice skating at Campus Martius to a great concert or a wonderful dinner or evening or day out with the family."
