DETROIT -- Last January, three new hotels opened in time for the auto show. The Detroit Riverside Hotel closed in August. The hotel went through a $35 million renovation project just before it closed. The building has had many names -- most notably, The Hotel Pontchartrain, then the Sheraton Detroit Hotel and finally the Detroit Riverside Hotel. In July, Mutual Bank in suburban Chicago foreclosed on the hotel's owners.

The hotel is being put up for sale, according to a recent Detroit News article. Furniture, fixtures and equipment are also being put up for sale at an auction. Meanwhile, the hotel's parking lot is still being used.

Two windows about halfway up the building are broken. It is unclear if the windows were broken by hotel guests, vandalists or by the staff. A sign on the window of the main entrance reads, "Security guard on duty 24 hours."

The hotel needs major repairs before it can reopen and that is a huge expense that a new buyer will have to face, according to a recent Detroit Free Press article.

The Detroit Riverside Hotel received bad press over the summer when attendees of the National Baptists Convention complained of unsafe living conditions. There was no air conditioning, no elevator service and no water. The staff at the hotel was helpless.

The hotel hosted a Chinese automotive conference during the auto show entitled China's Emerging Auto Market in 2008. Over the last few years, automaker smart USA has showcased some of its vehicles alongside the hotel's property during the auto show.

The Detroit Riverside Hotel was built in 1965 with 25 floors. There are 367 rooms inside along with a restaurant and a fitness center. It had a famous guest in 1980 during the Republican National Convention. Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush stayed in the hotel during that time.

The big question is...will this hotel be open in time for the 2010 North American International Auto Show? If not, it will be a major eyesore since it is located right across the street from Cobo Center, where it is being held.

A "For Sale" sign was added to the hotel around the beginning of December 2009.
