DETROIT
-- Chrysler
Group LLC debuted the redesigned 2011 Jeep Compass
at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS)
in Detroit. The 4-door SUV is assembled in Belvidere,
Illinois. It is equipped with either a 2.0-liter inline-4
engine producing 154 hp or a 2.4-liter inline-4 engine
creating 172 hp. While the Compass has not carried
"Trail Rated" badge in the past, the new
model does. The Compass is designed for driving on
flat or unpaved roads. Sales of the Compass were up
by almost 4,000 units in 2010.
"The
new Compass is a great addition for the Jeep lineup,"
said Jim Morrison, head of Jeep Brand Product Marketing.
"It's really special to us for two reasons. One,
it's a totally recognizable Jeep. It's getting rave
reviews already. It's a really nice and sophisticated
new look on the front of this vehicle. The second
reason we're really excited about it is because it's
a true 'Trail Rated' Jeep now. You can get the vehicle
with an off-road package."
The
new Compass features a revised suspension for better
handling, a brand new interior with more standard
equipment and option packages.
"We've
given it the extra capability that makes it a true
Jeep," Morrison added. "We need to prove
our capability and we've got a great community following.
Because it's got the ability to transfer torque and
keep the vehicle in a short footing whether you're
taking the vehicle off road or going through a rain
storm or heavy snow, it's a very capable vehicle.
People expect that from Jeep and that's why we're
proud of what Compass can do now. Obviously, Jeeps
are very safe to drive."
It
also comes with 17-inch aluminum wheels, skid plates,
a four-wheel-drive system and an increased ground
clearance by another inch.
"It
gets up to 29 mpg and beats everybody with city fuel
economy with 22 mpg," the head of Jeep Brand
Product Marketing explained. "It's also very
fuel efficient. We are changing the manufacturing
numbers every month. If demand is there, we'll keep
increasing production. We expect a lot of good news
out of this new Compass. It's got the new Jeep steering
wheel with integrated audio controls, integrated cruise
control. It starts at just over $19,000. Here in the
United States, $19,295. This vehicle you can get for
$239 a month on a lease."
I
think the Compass is perfect for the college student
who may be going away to school. It is great for driving
to visit friends, family or to just take a road trip!
