More automakers coming to 2011 NAIAS as Cobo Center receives upgrades PHOTO BY JASON RZUCIDLO / ©AMERICAJR.com The 2011 NAIAS will feature more automakers than it did in 2010.
DETROIT -- The 2011 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) show floor is expected to be completely full. Many automakers that did not display any vehicles in recent years are coming back to the Motor City in January. Porsche, Saab, Nissan, Suzuki and Mitsubishi are some of the automakers that are expected to have displays at Cobo Center. Meanwhile, upgrades are being made to Cobo Center to get the building ready for the 2011 NAIAS. Auto show Chairman Barron Meade and Vice Chairman Bill Perkins said the show floor will be full in 2011 with manufacturers and other industry exhibitors. Meade indicated that more announcements will be made in coming months related to new exhibitors and new show features to keep the global NAIAS event an industry benchmark. "This will continue the perception of an industry rising like a phoenix," Perkins told LeftLaneNews.com. Porsche made the decision to return to the NAIAS after seeing a 25 percent increase in sales in the Detroit market. The automaker did not display at the auto show in 2008, 2009 or 2010. Former GM brand Saab will also have also have a display in 2011. FIAT showed two vehicles at the Detroit show in 2010. The automaker will have its own display at the L.A. Auto Show, so it is possible that FIAT will also get its own display at the NAIAS. Nissan, Suzuki and Mitsubishi have contacted the NAIAS about having a display. However, no official announcement has been made yet. Also, the chairmen said the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority, which helped create multiple changes to the Cobo Center venue, will oversee additional improvements for 2011:
Cobo Center already received one round of improvements. The second round of improvements, listed above, will cost $35 million. After receiving positive response from the 2010 auto show, Meade said the two-day press preview will be continued in 2011. Customer research, international and local journalists, as well as global manufacturers appreciated the extra travel and preparation day that the Monday-Tuesday schedule provides.
