REVIEW: 735,370 people attended the 2011 North American International Auto Show for a 3-percent increase By Jason Rzucidlo

Auto show spokesman Sam Locricchio was right. He told me that the 2011 show would be like the "feel good film of the year in that a lot of the promises that had been eluded to in the first two years are coming to fruition." Indeed it was! A total of 735,370 people visited Cobo Center for the NAIAS during public days. If you add in the news media, the industry preview attendees, all of the construction workers and product specialists, it's safe to say that 1 million people saw the auto show from the time it was being set up until the last day it was taken down. All of their speeches had one thing in common. [1.29.11]

Pixar's "Cars 2" previewed at 2011 AutoWeek Design Forum By Jason Rzucidlo

In 2006, "Cars" Director John Lasseter spoke at the AutoWeek Design Forum. This year, it was all about the sequel, "Cars 2" Co-Director Brad Lewis and Art Director Jay Schuster offered a preview of the new animated film, which is scheduled to be released on June 24, 2011. There will be many differences in the second film. It was a great time to talk about movies, since Michigan is called "Hollywood East" due to our state's 42 percent tax incentive for the film industry. [1.24.11]

China's Road to Electrification Unveiled at the 2011 NAIAS By Mike Wrathell

In 15 years, China will run out of oil. Gasoline. Petroleum. Whatever you want to call it. Pick your poison. Unless they find a big oil reserve like we did in North Dakota (and haven’t “harvested” yet), or start offshore drilling in the international waters of the Gulf of Mexico or Tonkin or elsewhere, China will have to rely 100 percent on foreign oil. Right now they get a lot from Iran, which explains a lot of their conduct on the UN Security Council. We may be in the same slow boat as China someday. [1.17.11]

Detroit Auto Show 2011: The Renaissance of a Classic? By Robert Powell

OK, maybe it wasn't a medieval festival with wooden tables displaying unwieldily armor just before artillery was invented, but the last North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) I attended three years ago was not far from it. Cobo Hall was dingy and patchwork leaky, a signi€cant number of the displays had the equivalent of armored horsepower that resembled testosterone extracts on wheels, with the humongous and egregious Hummers sucking up oor space in the same way they suck up gasoline. The Volt Steals The Thunder at the 2011 NAIAS By Mike Wrathell

Arriving a few decades later than it should have, GM, or ObamaMotors if you prefer, now has a new sensation on its hands, to allude to INXS’s best song. Hot models that would make Paris Hilton feel envy were peppered with questions about the stylish North American Car of the Year that comes in black, crystal red, cyber gray, silver ice, viridian joule and white diamond. One shade of the silver Volt has some green in it, one of the Michigander models told me. [1.13.11]

Entering the North American International Auto Show’s main floor at Cobo Hall can’t be done without seeing the latest models based on alternative power. The Detroit Electric brand to bring back its electric vehicles By Jason Rzucidlo

This year, we are kicking off our coverage of the 2011 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) inside The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich. The 1922 Detroit Electric was one of the first electric vehicles ever produced. It is on display inside the museum. The vehicle was built by the Detroit Electric Car Company from 1907 to 1942. It is a four-passenger model 90 coupe. There will be many modern electric vehicles on display at the 2011 NAIAS. [10.2.10]
