Park downtown and take the People Mover to the 2011 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) PHOTO BY JASON RZUCIDLO / ©AMERICAJR.com Visitors and members of the media are encouraged to ride the Detroit People Mover during the 2011 North American International Auto Show.
DETROIT -- Exhibitors, members of the media and the public are encouraged to park their cars downtown then hop on the People Mover for a quick ride to Cobo Center. It's the fastest way to get around downtown Detroit. There are 13 People Mover stations around a 2.9-mile loop around the downtown district. The North American International Auto Show kicks off on Jan. 10 and runs through Jan. 23. "It gives you a different look at downtown from above and rides into a lot of venues, such as Cobo Center, where the auto show will be hosted," said Ericka Alexander, marketing specialist for the People Mover. "Then, it also goes into a lot of entertainment venues and landmarks around the city. It's a great trip for any family and visitors who want to enjoy some of the downtown Detroit highlights." The People Mover is not just for business people. Regular folks can ride it to get a bite to eat and catch a Red Wings or a Tigers game. "Absolutely, it's for residents, it's for visitors, it's for commuters, it's really for everyone, that's what public transit is all about," the marketing specialist added. "It's something that you can use to your benefit and it's always a fun ride for kids, too." The hours of operation for the People Mover will be extended during the 2011 North American International Auto Show. "For press preview, it will be standard hours because it's during the week so it will be 6:30 in the morning and then we close at midnight," Alexander explained. "For the public days, we're open starting on Saturdays at 7:30 in the morning and we close at 2 a.m. On Sundays, we open at 8 a.m. and close at midnight. Then, the Monday through Thursday schedule is 6:30 a.m. to midnight." The People Mover will be running until 2 a.m. on the night of the auto show charity preview, Friday, January 15. "Charity preview is a great night, we like to see everyone dressed up in black-tie," the marketing specialist continued. "It's something that is for a worthy cause and a number of great charities. We're open until 2 a.m. with a standard opening of 6:30." Each ride on the Detroit People Mover is 50 cents. However, monthly passes are available for purchase at www.thepeoplemover.com. The price has been lowered to $10, a savings of half off the regular price. "They can either use U.S. coins to pay at our fare gates," Alexander added. "They can step right up to the token machine and one dollar will give them two round trips. If they would like to use a monthly pass, we have that definitely available at a special price. We've cut the price down to $10 per month and that is a permanent price reduction." Alexander said the Detroit People Mover is very safe. There are security cameras at all stations and transit officers are riding on certain trains throughout the day. "The People Mover is an extremely safe system," the marketing specialist explained. "You'll see transit officers, a lot of closed circuit surveillance. We have very few incidents on the system. People are very happy in general to ride. The stations are well lit and very clean. People are pretty secure in riding and having a good experience." There is a maximum of five two-car trains running on the People Mover at once. The average wait time is two to three minutes between each train. "The trains come every 90 seconds on average and so there's always a train coming," Alexander said. The People Mover has been used as a filming location on several occasions due to our state's 42 percent tax incentive for the film industry. "We actually had a filming for Street Kings 2," she continued. "Specs Howard is shooting a commercial in the upcoming months. We do keep pretty busy. It's a landmark people are recognizing around the country as a result of these projects." Jason Rzucidlo reporting on the Detroit People Mover for AmericaJR.com.
