Exhibitors, the media to have two less hotels to choose from for the 2011 NAIAS PHOTO BY JASON RZUCIDLO / ©AMERICAJR.com The Omni Detroit Hotel at River Place closed its doors on Oct. 12, 2010. It was always sold out during the time of the auto show in previous years.
DETROIT -- Members of the media and exhibitors will have two fewer hotels to select from when the 2011 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) comes to Detroit in January. Last year, the Detroit Riverside Hotel closed its doors just before the start of the 2010 auto show. On Oct. 12, the Omni Detroit Hotel at River Place went out of business. Although the hotel is only about a mile away from Cobo Center, it was always busy during the time of the auto show. Caryn Kboudi, a vice president at Omni Hotels headquarters in Dallas, said the company was closing the hotel, but was taking a number of prospective buyers, for the 108-room property on Detroit's east riverfront. It opened in the late 1980s as the River Place Inn, according to an article in the Detroit Free Press. Since then, the hotel has undergone many name changes and owners. All 76 workers at the Omni Detroit Hotel have lost their jobs. This means that hotel rooms will be even harder to come by for the auto show in January. The Hilton Garden Inn hotel in downtown Detroit is also suffering, according to the article. It may be the next to close if business does not increase there significantly. The 2011 NAIAS begins with the press days on Jan. 10 and 11. The industry preview will take place on Jan. 12 and 13 with the charity preview on Jan. 14. The auto show will be open to the public from Jan. 15 through 23. Hotel rooms are still available in downtown Detroit.
