DETROIT -- On Sunday, Jan. 9, the Motor City hosted the 15th Annual Urban Wheel Awards and Green Car and Technology Exhibit at the Sound Board Theater.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing began the ceremony by thanking the automotive industry for its role in national economic growth. He also gave thanks to Executive of the Year: Ford Motor Company Group Vice President of Global Purchasing Tony K. Brown, Lifetime Achievement: Rodney O’Neal-CEO and President of Delphi, Frank Venegas, Jr.-Chairman and CEO of The Ideal Group, Inc, and Andra Rush-President and CEO, Rush Group, LLC.

“I want to congratulate and thank Tony Brown from Ford Motor Company. I want to thank and congratulate Andra Rush from Rush Trucking and Dakkota. I want to thank and congratulate Rodney O’Neal from Delphi and I want to thank and congratulate Frank Venegas,” Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said.

This year’s theme, “15 years of Emerging Diversity in the Auto Industry,” awarded automotive leaders from across the nation who embraced and promoted diversity. Hosted by the Emerging Diversity Education Fund (EDEF) and Decisive Media, the 15th Annual Urban Wheel Awards began the day with a green-ribbon cutting ceremony and car show.

The Green Car and Technology Exhibit lasted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and featured some of the latest hybrid and electric designs from Hyunadi, Lincoln and Jeep. Designed for consumers to get the best quality from a vehicle that is either electric or of hybrid design Rick Phillips from Detroit 1-8-7 said he wants a vehicle that is affordable, has good mileage and a good charge.

“The thought is there the process hasn’t taken place yet. As time goes on, I’ll get into it but yes, I do want to change,” Phillips said.
