DETROIT -- The 2014 Cadillac ELR is basically a Chevrolet Volt, but more luxurious. The electric luxury sedan made its debut during a press conference at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) on Tuesday, Jan. 15. Later that day, the ELR was named the Best Production Vehicle at the EyesOn Design Awards.

It is based on the Converj concept that made its debut at the NAIAS in 2009. The 2014 Cadillac ELR shares the same powertrain as the Volt, meaning that one can travel for 40 miles on battery power alone until a gasoline-powered charger kicks in for a total range of 300 miles.

"We have electric vehicle technology that's going to expand in the market and really do well for us," said Sabin D. Blake, Marketing Manager for Cadillac. "As you can see, we've got a really beautifully designed car. It really stands out in terms of styling, design and luxury appeal. When you take a look at the interior and the materials used, I've seen no other vehicle that uses materials like this. It's really a standout, stunning vehicle."

What are some of the interior and exterior features on this new vehicle?

"First of all, you see this prominent body line that goes from the rear to the front of the car," he explained. "It really gives it that aggressive look and it looks like the car is moving, even when it's standing still. We have four, 20-inch wheels and tires that's standard with the vehicle. Here on the front, we have the typical Cadillac grille. We have lower air shutters that close when you reach certain speeds. It helps with the aerodynamics of the vehicle and helps with the efficiency. Also, when the doors close, the door handles are hidden. Also on the outside are lovely jeweled headlights--full LED on the front and rear lights. On the inside, we have real wood, real carbon fiber, we have chrome, everything that you'd expect to find in a Cadillac."

What type of engine is inside and how much horsepower does it produce?

"For this vehicle, we like to talk about the torque," Blake added. "It features 295 lb.-ft. of torque, about the same as a BMW M3. It has instant torque in an electric car. When you're merging on a freeway, it gets you up to exactly where you need to go."

Please tell me more about the battery and the charging times.

"It's a 16.5-kWh battery. With a 240-volt charger, it's about four and a half hours to charge it up. It also comes for a standard charger for 120-volt outlets as well."

Where will the ELR be manufactured and how many will be produced?

"We're proud to say it's being made in Detroit at your Detroit-Hamtramck plant," the marketing manager said. "I can't speak to any volume numbers, but it will be a limited production.

I also met up with Autoline Detroit's John McElroy and he shared this thoughts on this new plug-in vehicle.

"I am impressed by the ELR," McElroy said. "I love the styling. I think it's good enough looking that people will come in and buy it just because it's beautiful and then discover, 'Oh, it happens to be a plug-in hybrid as well.' I think it's good. It will bring new people into the showroom for Cadillac, people who they would not normally get. Overall, a good effort for them."

Pricing has not yet been announced--it will be available in the middle of this year. Look for the 2014 Cadillac ELR in U.S. showrooms beginning next January.
