DETROIT -- 2013 is being called the year of the pickup truck, according to automotive analysts. Chevrolet has introduced several new features for the 2014 model of its Silverado. It comes with a new lighter, but stiffer frame and cab, a brand new interior and three new engines.

Other new additions include video screens and the ability to go online wirelessly. To allow for a smoother airflow around the vehicle, mirrors were redesigned and the roof and tailgate were also modified. Another cool feature is the new step on the rear bumper to allow for easier access to the bed of the truck.

"It's stronger, more capable and smarter than the vehicle it replaces," said Carl Hillenbrand, product manager of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. "Stronger in that we have a new powertrain. We have three new engines. They are all the new EcoTec family of engines: a V6, 5.3-liter, V8 as well as a 6.2-liter, V8. They are all better horsepower, more torque as well as better fuel economy on every one of those three engines. They all have technologies in them like active fuel management, which will shut off some of the cylinders when not needed to get you better fuel economy. New for this family of engines is the direct injection."

Please tell me about some of the interior and exterior features of this new truck.

"We have a step built into the corner of the bumpers," he added. "It's very easy to get into the pickup box. We've done a lot of enhancements on the box. As a matter of fact, upper tie downs are available as well as some cargo bed lighting. If you have a tonneau cover, you can see what's inside when you open the tailgate. The interior is much more comfortable, more vertical instrument panel as well as connectivity. We have our new infotainment system, which gets connectivity to all of the Bluetooth devices as well as 8-inch touchscreen radios or you can get navigation."

What makes this new Silverado unique from the new Ford F-150 or the RAM 1500?

"The fact that we give all of the high tech features on every one of our engines right from the base V6," the product manager explained. "That's probably the biggest distinguishing feature. This is basically our small block family of engines that we've had. We've been around since 1955 with those engines and we've added more and more technology every year."

What's the fuel economy like on the 2014 model truck?

"We have not released the fuel economy or the horsepower, the actual ratings yet. We're still waiting for final EPA testing and SAE testing."

How many of these new Silverados will be made and where?

"We don't give a forecast of exactly what the quantities are," Hillenbrand said. "We do have three plants that assemble these trucks. We have a plant in Flint, Mich., we also have a plant in Fort Wayne, Ind., and a plant in Silao, Mexico."

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado will go on sale this summer. Pricing has not yet been announced for the new model.
