NOVI, Mich. -- I went to the China Council for Promotion of International Trade where the forum discussed the present and future of the automotive industry in China and its relationship to the worldwide market. The opening remarks were made by Nancy Guo, Session Chairman.

The world is moving towards globalization while the innovation of science and technology is making new breakthroughs. With these issues in mind, the theme this year is "U.S.--China dialogue: Synergy: Propel the Auto Industry into Prosperity." Since the past year, many new challenges and opportunities have emerged in the automotive industry.

David Cole, Chairman Emeritus Center for Automotive Research and Chairman of Auto Harvest, says there is a big change in the auto industry after the restructuring. The big issue today is benefits and reinvestment which involves tooling. The Chinese are worried about vanishing boundaries of technology from Korea, Taiwan, India, Brazil and also the United States. In the future, the fear is there will be no jobs for unskilled labor on the assembly line. You will need at least a two-year college degree. For every worker on the assembly line, there are nine other suppliers involved. We are trying to keep costs down in today's world and striving for innovation and success.

The auto industry is growing rapidly. The new fuel technology is unknown at this point. It could be propane, ammonia, natural gas, advanced batteries or bio fuels. Lithium batteries currently have a heat problem which is a concern.

Wang Xia, chairman, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Automotive Sub-Council, and executive chairman, Global Automotive Forum Organizing Committee, says that talking and communication will bring the Chinese and American auto industry to a common understanding with a win-win cooperation.

G. Mustafa Mohatarem, Global Chief Economist from General Motors, reported 81 million auto/truck sales worldwide. His economic team forecasts economic growth and vehicle sales in the countries around the globe. Growth is very strong in India but there is risk, but the pay off is good.

This event ran from 3:00 to 6:45 p.m. and was held at the Sheraton Detroit Novi Hotel in Novi, Michigan.
