DETROIT -- This year, the Motorcity Automotive Industry (MAIN) Event took place at the Max Fisher Music Center in Detroit. Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk was named the Global Industry Executive of the Year along with his plug-in electric car, Tesla Model S, Motor Trend's 2013 Car of the Year.

Unveiled at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, Tesla Motors gave us new ideas as to what the Model X crossover may look like. "Interior Exploration" as Tesla likes to call it is a mix of white and black leathers. The work is being done by Tesla Design Studio in southern California. The exterior also black and white is unchanged from the last time we saw the Model X. The falcon wing doors are one of the coolest features on this new model.

The Tesla Model X can go from zero to 60 mph in less than five seconds. It comes with a choice of two batteries: a 60-kWh or an 85-kWh. There are three drivetrain options: rear-wheel drive, dual motor all-wheel drive or the performance option, a dual motor all-wheel drive version. Since it is an electric vehicle, it produces zero emissions. Expect for production to begin in late 2013.

Musk is also known as the founder of internet payment system, PayPal. If you ever bought or sold anything on eBay, chances are that you used PayPal. In addition, he serves as the CEO and Chief Designer of SpaceX. On May 25, 2012, the California-based company was the first private company to send cargo to the international space station.

Other award winners include:

  • Industry Innovator of the Year: Moray Callum (Executive Director of Americas Design for Ford Motor Co.)
  • Next Generation of Design Innovation Award: Cherise Caldwell (Transportation Design Senior at Lawrence Technological University)
  • Designing for the Future Award: 1st place: Vladislav Mazolevski (Republic of Belarus); 2nd place: Dylan Schmidt (Sycamore, Ill.); 3rd place: Tamila Abuseridze (Russia) and Michael Silbereis (Germany) [tie]

The MAIN Event wrapped up with a fashion show, which was held in conjunction with Detroit Fashion Week.
