DETROIT -- The Hyundai HCD-14 Genesis Concept was unveiled on Monday at the NAIAS. John Krafcik, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor America, began the presentation. "We are going to take a look at 2012 for recent performance," Krafcik said. "We sold 703,007 vehicles in 2012. The average cost per vehicle was $946. Last year we had five different models that broke sales records. Veloster achieved record sales and beat expectations. Genesis and Equus has broken prior year records also. Hyundai has sold more than 124,000 Genesis sedans since its introduction in 2008."

Back in 2010, premium customers were hungry for a smarter option. Time is luxury. A simple idea was to save time. "It's your time, your place," Krafcik added. "We began 'at your service' valet pickup for service maintenance where we pick up your car at any location (house, job site) and bring it to the dealership for service. We believe it is time to delight our premium customers.

"Equus owners says the Equus is the most appealing luxury car, according to J.D. Power and Associates. We completely re-designed our lineup. The Hyundai HCD-14 Genesis Concept is a really important concept car for Detroit. We want to know what you think. This is a spiritual guide for a future line of our products."

Chief Designer Chris Chapman said Hyundai had a big idea in mind with this concept. Everything was designed to instill a deeper connection with the vehicle. "Like a hand made suit, it is tailored and flattering in all the right places," Chapman said. "Details are meant to be sculptured to live, breathe and just "be". The grille is upright without being uptight. Rear-tail lamps have razor sharp edges that says goodbye to the wind."

No details on the powertrain were given during the press conference.

The interior has a human machine interface system which uses voices, hands and eyes to talk to the car. It eliminates the need for buttons and controls. Instead, it tracks the driver's eye movement and hand gestures for climate control, stereo and navigation system changes. It has a heads-up display to keep the driver's eyes on the road at all times. The effect is a natural and at-one feeling with the car. It is designed to defy, design and delight.

"There is fresh news today," the president and CEO explained. "No car has ever been faster than the Genesis coupe going up Pikes Peak. Rhys Millen will drive the rear-wheel drive Genesis coupe racing car up Pikes Peak again in 2013."
