2015 Subaru WRX STI sports sedan revealed at NAIAS in Detroit
Only 1,000 of these limited edition 2015 Subaru WRX STI's will be produced.
DETROIT -- With everything that has happened with the Arctic blaze, catching the flu or pneumonia, the North American International Auto Show not only helps keep our engines literally warm, but make sure Detroit remains the Motor City, not the Winter City.
For instance, you have Dodge celebrating almost a century of cars, which includes the 1969 Charger, whose fame peaked thanks to the General Lee from CBS' The Dukes of Hazzard, which premiered on January 26, 1979 with Tom Wopat and John Schneider as cousins Bo and Luke Duke, good 'ol boys who spent seven seasons "fightin' the system like a two modern-day Robin Hood".
Another is Viper, which debuted on NBC as a mid-season replacement on January 2, 1994 and returned to television two years later as a syndicated series (1996-99) about a Viper sports car (first a red RT/10 roadster, then a blue GTS Coupe) designed to become a crime-fighting vehicle known as the Defender.
Then, there is Subaru. The 2015 WRX STI sports sedan made its grand debut at Cobo Center this year.
"It's kind of the halo car for Subaru, it's our most powerful and fastest car," said Dominick Infante, national manager of product communications at Subaru of America. "In fact, we launched the original STI North American market in Detroit in 2003. It's kind of like coming back to Detroit to launch the new model. It's the most sophisticated all-wheel-drive system that we have. All new chassis on this car. It's the best handling STI ever made."
The new WRX STI is equipped with a 2.5-liter, inline-four engine producing 305 hp and 290 lb.-ft. of torque. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. Another cool feature are the windshield wipers and mirrors that deice themselves.
"We've got the blue with the gold wheels, which is a special edition," Infante added. "This is something that people have been asking for, for a long time. This is limited to about 155, with limiter off, probably do about 163 mph. It's really the chassis and the handling that's so unique. We've got our new torque vectoring system on this. It helps it go through corners. The grip is unbelieveable. Like race cars, you can apply full power in a corner. You don't slide out, you just power through."
Pricing has not yet been announced. However, it is expected to be in the low- to mid-30's. Look for the 2015 WRX STI in dealers this Spring. Only 1,000 of them will be made because it is a limited edition.
