Volvo Concept XC Coupe offers a preview of the next generation XC90
The award-winning Volvo Concept XC Coupe
DETROIT -- The Volvo Concept XC Coupe debuted at the 2014 North American International Auto Show as the perfect vehicle for those with active lifestyles. It won the Best Concept Car Award and the Best Use of Color, Graphics and Materials Award from EyesOn Design on the second media day of the auto show. Several design elements from this concept vehicle will be used on the new version of the Volvo XC90 that will premiere at an auto show later this year. Maybe in L.A.?
"It gives you a view of our more versatile lifestyle for people that like the outdoors, the outdoor skiing, the surfing," said Tony Nicolosi, President and CEO of Volvo Cars North America. "What's really important about this car is the future design cues that you'll see in the cars that are coming out, the XC90 that's coming out a year from now. Later this year, we'll launch it, but it will go on sale the first quarter of 2015. If you see the daytime running lights, the strong grille, the strong hood. In the back, we have C-shaped taillights. These are all things you'll see on future models. I'd love to have this car for sale. I sent a picture to my son and he said, 'Oh, can we get that car?' I said, 'I don't think we're building that car.' But a lot of what you see here, you will see in future Volvo's."
Nicolosi wouldn't discuss the engine in the new Concept XC Coupe. Instead, he discussed Volvo's new Drive-E Engines.
"They're four-cylinder engines, but we don't want to talk about cylinders. It's really power. These engines will give us best-in-class fuel economy, best-in-class performance, and best-in-class in terms of the amount of emissions they release. They're better for the environment. We will have a plug-in electric hybrid available a few months later after the launch of that car. That will have three drive modes. You'll have your regular gasoline mode, your pure electric mode and you'll have a combined mode. That combined mode will give you close to 400 hp."
Volvo is known for its safety. This Concept XC Coupe comes with several new safety features.
"We are the leaders in safety and we will continue to be with a lot of the technologies coming out in the XC90 like nighttime pedestrian detection, animal detection," the president and CEO explained. "If you drive off the road, you'll have a steering that will assist you back onto the road. We'll have a lot of first-time safety features coming out in our new products as well."
I really liked the orange trim on the bumper and on the tires. This concept vehicle reminds me of the BMW i3 crossover utility vehicle.
Look for the new XC in U.S. showrooms at the end of the first quarter, beginning of the second quarter of 2015. A plug-in electric model will be available a few months later.
