She talked about the infamous ignition switch recall, which affected about 29 million GM vehicles. "A series of mistakes were made that led to a tragic outcome," Barra said about the recall. "When we made the decision to do the recall, we jumped into action. That's when I was aware." Keith Crain described it as the "gorilla in the room."

The awards are given to companies in who are recognized for highest shareholder returns within one-year and three-year periods among Global Vehicle Manufacturers, Global Automotive Suppliers and U.S. Automotive Retailers categories. The winners were determined based on their total shareholder return, based on the value of $100 USD invested in a stock over one- and three-year periods and compares relative returns generated by different companies and industry segments, taking into account changes in share prices, dividends and other distributions as well as stock buybacks or splits.

It was a long wait since the race took place in May and the trophy was presented in January. "This is just amazing, its an incredible honor to be here tonight," said Hunter-Reay. "This is truly a kid's dream come true. I sat in front of the TV watching this sport. Michael, you're one of them."

"I'm going to spend a lot more time with the team, the governor and the mayor to see if we can find a way around this problem. I think if we can find a reasonable compromise, I'd like to keep it there. They deserve it."
