DETROIT -- In January 2013, Volkswagen introduced the CrossBlue at the North American International Auto Show. The CrossBlue Coupe followed at the 2013 L.A. Auto Show. This year, the German automaker took the wraps off the Cross Coupe GTE plug-in vehicle. This is the third and final revision to the concept that will become VW's new seven-seat SUV that will hit the market at the end of 2016.

"It is a very bold design, very interesting concept, huge interior, touch-screen concepts all over the place," said Klaus Bischoff, design director for Volkswagen AG. "I think it will be intriguing for American customers. As a seven-seater, this car will go into production. We are considering this coupe-type of design for a five-seater also. We'll see. I think Volkswagen will be very attractive to the American consumer in the future.s"

The Cross Coupe GTE comes with a V6 plug-in hybrid drivetrain, with 276-horsepower 3.6 VR6® FSI engine, two electric motors (54 and 114 hp) and all-wheel drive. The hybrid has a manufacturer-estimated fuel economy rating of 70 MPGe. In E-mode, it offers up to 20 miles (50-60 km) of pure electric driving. It is outfitted for DC fast charging, which would only take 20-30 minutes to get to 80 percent full.

"The interior is very spacious, a lot of headroom and comfort zones," Bischoff explained. "All features are controlled by touch screens. You have an active info display in front of you that offers a lot of information and applications for your daily use. It offers a lot of advanced German technology. We have a feeling for quality that is special. You can see this throughout the whole concept. The sharpness of the lines, the way we treat metal, and materials is different from other manufacturers."

The Cross Coupe GTE on display in Detroit featured a cool blue paint called Grand Pacific Glacier. On the inside, it comes with a matching Ink Blue Nappa leather border. The concept car now presented in Detroit is 190.8 inches long, 79.9 inches wide and 68.3 inches high.

It will be built at VW's factory in Chattanooga, Tenn. Pricing has not yet been announced at this time. Stay tuned!

The Cross Coupe GTE's packaging will change a bit in production – the new concept has five seats, not the seven that Volkswagen plans for the production SUV.
