LIVONIA, Mich. -- Just a few days after Japan was hit with multiple earthquakes and a tsunami, Nissan decided to reveal an all-new vehicle. The 2012 NV, the automaker's first commercial van for the United States market, was shown at an SAE Detroit Section meeting on Tuesday at the Burton Manor in Livonia. It is designed to compete with the Ford Econoline, Chevrolet Express and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

"We knew we had to be competitive," said Joe Castelli, Vice President of Nissan Commercial Vehicles and Fleet. "This is a very difficult market for Nissan to jump into. We're taking on two strong competitors. In 2010, our sales surpassed 700,000 units. Our commercial vehicles represent 20 percent of Nissan's sales. We think we have a very innovative product at a time when the market and the industry are coming back. Buyers are looking for different things. We have an all-new chassis. We think having a standard V6 will attract some customers."

The Nissan NV is being assembled in both Canton, Mississippi and in Aguascalientes, Mexico. It comes in a 3-door body style or a 4-door body style. The NV is perfect for businesses to display their logo on the side of the vehicle for others to see as an advertisement. It starts at $24,590 and goes up to $39,915.

The all-new commercial van comes in three models: NV 1500 (entry-level), the NV 2500 and the NV 3500 (high-end). All three models come with a 12-volt outlet in the front instrument panel. However, the two higher-end models come with another 12-volt outlet in the center console, a 110-volt outlet in the center console and a 110-volt outlet in the cargo area.

"It is designed around loading," said Stephen Soley, Manager of Vehicle Evaluation and Quality for Nissan North America. "We evaluated the competitors. We set performance targets for the Nissan NV. We tested it with the usage of virtual wind tunnel. We tested vehicles in 19 cities and outfitted these vehicles with typical equipment. Standard 40-inch pallets can be loaded from the back door. It features larger mirrors with less wind noise. The Nissan NV offers best available fuel economy by offering a V6."

The all-new Nissan NV offers 323 cubic feet of cargo space. Every model comes with integrated reinforced mounting points to install shelves without having to drill holes. In addition, each NV comes with triple lighting. The V6 model produces 261 hp and 281 lb.-ft. of torque. Meanwhile, the V8 model produces 317 hp and 385 lb.-ft. of torque.

Optional additions to the commercial van include a higher roof, a V8 engine, a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, a touch screen navigation system, a rear-view camera and a USB audio input.

"We're able to commonize the roof center as well," said Robert Blanchard, Senior Manager of Body Engineering for Nissan North America. "We ended up using Dow Automotive adhesive for the roof ditch. For the first time in the market, we wanted to be the best. The roof bow can hold 60 pounds. We have six standard floor D-rings. We also offer ladder rack. The design came from the Europe vehicle built in Barcelona. We achieve the requirement of 3.0 unload vehicle weight. It was a big challenge. We did it. Hopefully, we will have more products to come."

The next SAE Detroit Section meeting will feature the Chevrolet Volt on Wednesday, April 13 at Cobo Center in downtown Detroit. It will be held during the time of the 2011 SAE World Congress. However, a separate ticket will be required for admission to the meeting.
