ROMULUS, Mich. -- Many of you know Paula Tutman as a reporter on WDIV-TV Local 4 in Detroit. However, she is also an accomplished author. Tutman reveals that she never wanted to be a television reporter and that writing is her strong point. She has released her first book, "Deadline!", which is part one of a series.

Tutman will be on tour this summer promoting the new book at airports, various bookstores, conferences and book conventions. She held a book singing last Sunday in front of the USA Travel Zone store inside Detroit Metropolitan Airport's North Terminal.

"I kind of stumbled into the TV news business and fell in love with it," said Paula Tutman, author of the book. "A couple years ago, thought, oh yeah, I'm supposed to be writing. So I started writing the book. My first draft I sent it to my father and he said, 'You know, it's not scary enough. So I went back to my reporter notes and my old tapes that I kept on this one case, one trial that I covered when I was a police reporter in Baltimore when the killer developed an obsession with me. So I went back to all of his letters and all of my notes and that's how I built the killer for the book."

"Deadline!" is about a crime reporter who shows up at the scene of a double murder. Two children get shot and killed. However, the killer remains on the loose and is on the scene. He notices his favorite television reporter is on the scene and hopes to meet her. The first book is 458 pages long and was published by Dailey Swan Publishing. It was released on May 25, 2008.

"I saw that she was a great journalist and thought I'd pick it up," said Emily Nisch of Bloomfield Hills, a traveler who purchased the book. "I'm interested in journalism and am applying for schools right now. I was reading the cover, it looks really interesting. Talking with Paula was great and I look forward to reading it. A nice surprise to see her."

She also indicated that the second book in the series is due out later this year, sometime around November. The book recently won the Hollywood Book Festival's 2009 Best General Fiction Award.

"Just coming back from my Fourth of July family reunion in Memphis, Tenn.," said Les Corder of Detroit, who stopped by to buy the book after returning on a flight. "Well I just looked over the back and I have so much respect for Paula Tutman's reporting. When I recognized her, I came over immediately and bought it without any reservations. I got an autographed copy for me and my wife. Of course, I admire Carmen Harlan but like I told her, Paula is coming up fast."

Tutman has several book singings in the metro Detroit area. On Saturday, Aug. 1, she will be at the Detroit Main Library on the Cass Avenue lawn from 12 to 4 p.m. On Friday, Aug. 14, Tutman will sign copies at As The Page Turns at 149 N. Center St. in Northville, Mich. beginning at 7 p.m.

"The book is fiction but is loosely based on life as a TV reporter," Tutman added. "The people who read it say it really changes the way they watch the news. I really do explain why you know how sometimes a story takes off and everybody's interested in it. Other stories are just as sensational but they don't have what we call legs. Really what I do is explain why we cover the things we do and how we make those decisions, why we do the things we do and how we get the stories we get."

"Amazon is great, don't get me wrong," said Tutman. "But they have so many books that it's hard to get credits toward best seller. First of all, an airport bookseller is fabulous. People from all over are going to stumble over, looking for something to read, they got a layover, they got a wait."

"Reporting pays my bills but I love writing," said Tutman. "I'm a writer and I've always considered myself a writer. I love writing and that's what I want to do."
