DETROIT -- The People Mover is one of the quickest ways to get around downtown Detroit. Now, riders will be forced to find a new mode of transportation. The People Mover will be closed completely for one month of construction.

The raised rail system will be out of service from Sunday, July 20 at 2:00 a.m. and will resume on Monday, August 18 at 6:30 a.m. Officials are encouraging people to walk to their destination while the construction takes place.

"We're asking out viewers to come out and join us in walking while we're being closed during that time," said Bonnie Washington, an accountant for the Detroit People Mover. "We're giving out FREE DPM pedometers at various DPM stations. Come in and pick one up. They are FREE. We have plenty to give out."

Pedometers are being passed out on Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at these DPM stations: Times Square, Joe Louis Arena, The Renaissance Center, Greektown and Broadway. Pedometers will also be passed out from Noon to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Financial District, Bricktown, The Renaissance Center, Greektown and the Cadillac stations.

Six major curves are being replaced because the rails are worn out along 1,800 feet of track. These six sections haven't been replaced in 21 years. The rest of the track is in good condition and will not require any replacement or renovation.

Normally, this type of construction would take up to three months. However, workers are streamlining the process and working double shifts to get it done in just one month.

The People Mover handles between 7,000 and 8,500 riders per day. Some of its stops are among Detroit's most popular attractions such as Greektown, The Renaissance Center, Joe Louis Arena and many other stops in between.

The People Mover is a 2.9-mile automated raised train that operates on a single track and on a one-way loop through the central business district. It makes 13 stops during its loops. Eight of those stops are built into pre-existing buildings. It began operation in 1987.
