Project Freedom to Present 1st Project Freedom Award to Michael Bouchard

Oakland County Sheriff exemplifies group's mission of public service to Michigan

DETROIT -- Project Freedom (www.projectfreedommi.org), a nonprofit organization that provides free home health lifts to disabled persons who could not otherwise afford them, is honoring Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard with its 1st Annual Project Freedom Award, which recognizes exemplary efforts in public service. The award will be presented during the 1st Annual Project Freedom Award Dinner on September 27, 2007 at the Troy Marriott Hotel.

"Sheriff Bouchard is an incredible public servant," said Gilbert A. Rice, president of Project Freedom. "He was a leading state legislator, rising to senate majority leader, and when former sheriff John Nichols unexpectedly passed away, Sheriff Bouchard answered the call and has been an extremely innovative leader as sheriff. The people of Oakland County recognized this by returning him to office with the highest vote total in any contested election in 2004. We believe Sheriff Michael Bouchard will set a high bar for future Project Freedom Award recipients."

The dinner, which begins at 7 p.m. will be emceed by WJR morning drive host Paul W. Smith. The Project Freedom award will be presented to Sheriff Bouchard by Mr. J. Thomas Clark. Tickets for the dinner are available for Patrons at $150 per person, and Benefactor tickets, which include a private reception prior to the event, are available for $250 by calling 248-644-4747. All proceeds go to Project Freedom for purchase of additional lift units.

Project Freedom is a 501 (c) (3) organization started in 2001 with the mission of providing lifting devices to needy disabled individuals throughout Michigan. Since its inception the program has grown from five lifts in March, 2001 to the more than 97 lifts currently in service. The lift is freestanding and takes up less than one square foot of floor space. The lift electrically lowers a four-point harness that connects to a sling placed under the patient. Then the patient can be safely raised and moved anywhere in the room with little risk of injury to the patient or caregiver.

Project Freedom installs the lifts at no charge to the recipient and allows them to use it for as long as it is needed. When the patient no longer needs the lift, it is removed, inspected and placed into another home. Through this system, Project Freedom has been able to assist more than 200 families as the number of lifts has grown.

Project Freedom is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, and donations may be tax deductible depending on each individual's tax situation. The program was launched in 2001 by the Hospitaler's Committee of Detroit Commandery No. 1, K.T., a local Masonic organization. Additional information is available at www.projectfreedommi.org or by calling (734) 240-2565.
