LIVONIA, Mich. -- Qdoba Mexican Grill is offering a "Kids Eat Free" weekend from Dec. 19 thru 20 to debut its new kids menu. One free kids meal is being given away to any child 12 or younger with the purchase of one adult entree. The new menu debuted earlier this week with more healthier options. All kids meals are handmade in front of the guest and topped with fresh ingredients and one of five salas.

"It's just out way to helping out parents," said Ted Stoner, Director of Strategic Product Development for Qdoba Mexican Grill. "We know parents are really busy right now, running around, doing last-minute holiday shopping. We thought this might be a nice gift for them."

Some of the new kids meal options include the naked burrito, taco and the quesadilla. Kids meals also come with applesauce or beans and milk or juice.

"We've always had tacos and quesadillas available to the kids," Stoner added. "But this year, we decided to roll out a new menu. It really kind of rounded out to make it a little healthier. We've built a new burrito for them that's a naked burrito for them, or in another words, a burrito served in a bowl without the tortilla for them. They can mix and match anything on that line. It makes it easier to eat a very, nutritious meal as well.

"We've also added a few side items," he said. "We've always offered chips and salsa to children. We're also offering apple sauce as well as our beans. Our beans are vegetarian beans. They're kind of like black beans and we can add a little cheese on there. Now we're also offering 1 percent milk in all locations as well as a 100 percent fruit juice drink."

The mexican restaurant works hard to stay different from its competitors like Taco Bell.

"For one, we do a lot more food preparation right in front of the guests," Stoner explained. "So we're grilling meats constantly, we slow roast our shredded pork and our shredded beef in house, we slow cook that for six to seven hours and we hand shred that in each and every restaurant. We have our marinated steak and chicken that we grill throughout the day right in front of our guests. You can't get in line without noticing the grill and watching someone cooking on it. We do a lot of fresh preparation in house."

Qdoba also offers a nutritional calculator on its website that allows kids to build, customize and calculate the nutritional value of every menu item.

"You can build through each and every item, just like you were in one of our lines," the director of strategic product development said. "You can decide if you want a tortilla or not. You can see what the nutritionals are on the tortilla. You can then add other ingredients and keep building it up. At any point if you want to know what one of those ingredients is contributing to, you just click on that ingredient and view all nutritional facts and print that out. It really allows the guests 100 percent transparency of our nutritional data in our ingredients."

Stoner said that Qdoba Mexican Grill is a fast casual restaurant instead of a fast food restaurant.

"We are quick, as far as getting in and out in a very timely manner, but a lot of those places that are that fast are taking a lot of shortcuts," he said. "We don't believe in shortcuts. We are doing things like I mentioned before the seven hours that it takes to cook the shredded beef, marinating the meats and grilling them right in front of the guests, hand-smashing guacamole, cooking dry beans. You can see the ingredients are just like ingredients you would have in your cupboard."

Qdoba Mexican Grill has locations all over metro Detroit including Ann Arbor, Birmingham, Clarkston, Farmington Hills, Livonia, Rochester Hills, Royal Oak, Southfield, Troy, Warren and Westland. Click here to find the nearest location to you.
