Fibrenew offers Tips to Remove Stains from Leather Furniture

ORCHARD LAKE, Mich. -- Whether coming in from out-of-town or coming home for school break, families come over and get together every holiday season to celebrate Christmas, open presents, ring in the New Year make resolutions and, most of all, eat and drink. That is where the furniture will take a severe beating, for anything can happen.

Since 1985, Fibrenew has been doing repairs and restoration of leather furniture and now has more than 200 franchises in nine countries -- half of them in the United States.

Now, they're providing tips that are always good to live by to prevent any unnecessary damage to leather, especially those caused by cleaning products.

If any food gets spilled on leather, the best thing to do is get to it quickly. Use plain water to wet the rag instead of using Windex or other alcohol-based cleaners, and try to blot it out. You should use a sponge and leather cleaner to work on messes that have soaked in. Another important tip is to avoid all substances that contain acetone that will take the color off your leather.

If your leather problem isn’t coming clean with these tips or if you have leather damaged by alcohol or acetone-based cleaners, call on Rick Walls, the local owner of Fibrenew in Oakland County. "I've done a lot of nail polish removers," he states. "People try to remove stains themselves and the cleaners they use leave a permanent spot."

“The main thing is to clean up the mess,” Walls said. But, "If a stain does sink in, call us. Furniture companies don’t do repairs; they'll recommend me."
