We all know how important it is to keep ourselves in top physical condition and what better way to stay healthy than by going for a run around some of the more scenic areas of Detroit that we’ve listed below.

West Side

First up you could try running down the West Side of Detroit, over there you have the Maybury State Park to take advantage of that comes with five different trails that can range from 4 to 11 miles depending on your fitness levels and how long you plan on being out for the day. The park offers 1,000 square acres of natural beauty away from the suburbs so it’s perfect if you want a few minutes away from the buzz of traffic.

Although you may want to be careful when choosing one of these trails as they also cross over mountain bike trails and equestrian tracks so you’ll regularly encounter a speeding mountain bike or a horse so just pay attention when you’re running.

North of the Suburbs

The next place you could try is North Detroit and the Wadhams to Avoca Trail. This long winding track will take you through some absolutely breathtaking scenery that looks fantastic all year round.

It’s even better to run along in autumn when you have a massive mix of reds, browns and deep oranges from the shedding leaves in the trees. You’ll also get to pass an old trestle bridge that follows an old local rail line that’s a great beauty spot worth stopping for even just for a few minutes of your run.

On the trail you’ll be running on a mixture of gravel and dirt based paths so wear a sturdy pair of shoes.

Clinton River Park Trail

Another one worth visiting for an afternoon this scenic route is only 4.5 miles in length so you can finish it in an afternoon. On your journey you’ll follow a dirt trail that hugs close to the banks of the Clinton River where you’ll get to enjoy the picturesque forest as well as do some nature spotting as you’ll see animals like deer, turtles and a ton of local waterfowl.

You’ll also be passing through several Heritage Parks so you’ll be able to get back to nature for a while when you use this route.

Detroit River Walk

If you want to stick a little closer to civilization then you can stop wasting your time on online games and get outside and do a little exercise by running along the Detroit River. The route is a short 3.5 mile trail that gives you beautiful views of the river that’s contrasted by the jutting Detroit skyline. The trail eventually links up with the Milliken State Park which has tons of plazas and miniature parks that you can relax in at the end of your run.

Worth noting is that if you run on the Western side of the route you’ll come across the Renaissance Center, towering sky-scrapers and the historic Cullen Family Carousels that contain intricately hand carved animals that can all be found in or around the Detroit River.

It also connects with the Eastern Market, which is a very popular famers market in the Detroit area so you could pick up a mid-run organic snack to keep you going.

These are only a couple of the more picturesque routes that you can run in Detroit. If you don’t want to run up and down the blocks near your home or at the gym these are perfect for you. There are also plenty of other routes out there to try and each one has its own beautiful sites and attractions to see while you’re out there.

So the next time you’re out running in the Detroit area, why don’t you try hitting up one of these beautiful outdoor trails instead of your usual route.
