NOVI, Mich. -- Just a walk away from Twelve Oaks Mall up 12 Mile Road in Novi, the local brass was occupied in touring and festivities that accommodated the latest campus opening of an interstate university. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place outside this new building in a heated tent. Although students attended their first day of class at the Novi location on Oct. 4, the campus was dedicated on Wednesday. The 37,000-square-foot campus is located at 41555 Twelve Mile Road near Meadowbrook Road.

"We are one of 11 campuses of South University," said Campus President William Bradford. "This is the first one in Michigan--all of our other schools are located in the south. We will be adding programs very quickly. We're heavily known for our medical areas. We're adding an Associates to Registered Nursing to a RN degree will be opening in January. We're looking to obtain our state approval for our nursing program as well as our physical therapy assisting program. We see ourselves growing on a small, regular basis. That's our objective."

Bachelor's degree programs are offered in Business Administration, Criminal Justice and Healthcare Management. In addition, the campus offers a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling and a Master of Business Administration degree.

"It's economic development for the area and it's economic development for the state of Michigan," said State Sen. Mike Kowall (R-White Lake). "Plus, it provides a tremendous service, educating people and get them ready for the workforce. As I said earlier when I was speaking, that's one of the main reasons companies are looking to come to Michigan. We're seeing a lot of companies, even coming back from Mexico wanting to come back to Michigan. It means a lot to the city of Novi to be a nucleus--a lot of universities moving into this immediate area."

South University is a great choice for those who have been laid off from the automotive industry. It offers programs that will allow workers to get trained for the jobs of the future.

"Our history dates back 110 years," said South University Chancellor John T. South III. "Despite the significant change in temperature from where I'm from in south Georgia, we're really glad to be here. We first explored opening a campus in Novi four years ago. To say we were going to Michigan, I've had a few strange looks. South University has always been in the south. We did not let an old idea hold us back. We were energized when we saw the willingness of this community to welcome us here. Michigan is a great place to be. You're now opening the doors to new businesses."

Since South University has a smaller student body of 100, faculty and staff have a tradition of knowing all of their students by name. That alone separates itself from many other universities, which have thousands of students. Bradford says the Novi campus will increase its student body at a slow rate.

"I am absolutely delighted at the opening of South University," said Novi Mayor David Landry. "In Novi, we believe first and foremost in diversity. That means diversity in all aspects of life. Diversity of our residents, diversity of our nonresidential tax base, our businesses. Part of that diversity is in education. We are delighted to have South University here. As we grow, we look forward to growing with you."

The Novi campus also offers distance learning, which uses cameras, microphones and digital screens to take teleconferencing to the next level. It allows students and faculty in one classroom to be engaged with students and faculty hundreds or thousands of miles away. Students will benefit from the resources and expertise across the university system.

"It's wonderful, the teachers are fantastic," said Nadine Brennan, a graduate student from West Bloomfield, Mich. "It's smaller classes so it's a lot of one-on-one attention. I just feel that they're very thorough in their teaching. The librarian really helps us out. Any time I've ever had any questions or any issues, the teachers and the librarian are always able to address them. They don't just give one specific answer. They go back until you really do get it. It's a new facility. I like what they were talking about in regards to it being not just another traditional school. They're doing mainly diagnostic work with the counseling."

South University joins Walsh College and Michigan State University, both of which have campuses in the Oakland County suburb of Novi. The city is becoming a hub for higher education in metro Detroit. Just down the street are the satellite campuses of Central Michigan University, Northwood University, Madonna University, Oakland Community College, Davenport University, Eastern Michigan University and the University of Phoenix. Schoolcraft College is located in nearby Livonia, Mich.

"The program here is really good because it has a personal touch," said Damian M. Prince, a graduate student from Southfield, Mich. "Whenever you have a question or comment or concern, you're able to walk into the office and get something. On the educational side, having real life professors that are in the field sort of talk to you from their experience and not necessarily from the textbook. It was a new university and there are a couple of programs in the area. I thought it was a good idea to chart some new territory in a different school."
