CALL (800) 374-4995 TO HELP!

TROY, Mich. -- Detroit country radio station WYCD (99.5 FM) is hosting its 9th Annual St. Jude Radiothon at the Oakland Mall in Troy on February 6th and 7th. The station is broadcasting LIVE from the shopping center both days in an effort to ask for your donations which will go directly toward the research hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

Listeners are encouraged to donate by calling (800) 374-4995 and becoming a "Partner in Hope." Individuals can pledge as little as $25 per month and put it on a credit card. That comes out to only 82 cents per day. One-time donations are also being accepted. Click here to make an online donation.

"Our goal is to educate our audience, about St. Jude, what they do, and how they rely solely on public donations to continue as the nations largest research facility, committed to finding CURES for childhood cancer," said Linda Lee, afternoon disc jockey at WYCD. "We hope and pray that our audience will generously support St. Jude, through a Partner in Hope, monetary donation.

"Through continued public support, St. Jude has made HUGE strides, in the SURVIVAL rates of many different types of childhood cancers. EVERY year, it seems the survival rates have increased, giving HOPE to parents whose children are stricken with these often times, deadly diseases."

The country radio station set a record for most donations in the 6 p.m. hour. An anonymous donor agreed to double all donations that were placed during the hour. As of 7 p.m. on the first day, WYCD collected $194,575 for St. Jude Research Hospital during the radiothon.

New this year is pizza parties for the top three school fundraisers. WYCD will provide a free pizza party for the top three schools that raise the most money for St. Jude Research Hospital. Teachers and students are encouraged to collect donations at their schools and then drop them off at the broadcast location at the center court of Oakland Mall. The radiothon lasts from 5 a.m. until 7 p.m. on both days.

Each hour, the country radio station has been offering special prizes to those who make a donation. Some of the prizes include an autographed guitar signed by country stars who performed at the Downtown Hoedown, a Keith Urban autographed platinum record and autographed electric guitars, among other prizes.

WYCD is also holding a special auction for St. Jude on its website. Those items include a Keith Urban autographed guitar plate, Clint Black autographed jeans and photo, a Rascal Flatts lithographed tile coaster, a Kenny Chesney autographed football, a Alan Jackson autographed guitar, a Trace Adkins autographed guitar, a Rodney Atkins autographed guitar, a Keith Urban platinum record and a Rascal Flatts autographed guitar. Other items are also available. Click here to bid on one of these items.

"This is the 2nd year we have added an online auction for people to help out!" Lee said.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is the largest pediatric research hospital in the world. It is finding cures and treatments for cancers and other catastrophic diseases that effect children. The moment that a discovery is announced, the information is shared with other hospitals. The research that happens at St. Jude will be shared with Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, Children's Hospital in Detroit and other facilities nationwide.

Detroiter Danny Thomas founded the research hospital. He went to the Motor City in search for a job in show business. He knelt in a Detroit church in front of the statue of St. Jude with only seven dollars and begged. His prayer was answered and he got his job, made money and promised to build a shrine. The shrine would later be dedicated to St. Jude.

"For instance, St. Jude's groundbreaking development of combination therapy, for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer, REVOLUTIONIZED leukemia treatment therapy worldwide, and increased the survival rate from 4%, when St. Jude opened in 1962, to 94% TODAY!" the afternoon disc jockey said.

The 99.5 WYCD St. Jude Radiothon continues on Thursday from 5 a.m. until 7 p.m. Oakland Mall is located at 412 W. 14 Mile Road just east of the I-75 junction. Click here for driving directions.

Congratulations to 99.5 WYCD for raising $469,510 for St. Jude!
