New pop singer Callaghan Smerek

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — At any given moment, one might find Callaghan Smerek’s hands and arms covered in pen scrawl. That’s because the 16-year-old singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist from Farmington Hills is practically always writing lyrics, and when it comes to capturing a song, she’s not going to let a little thing like paper stand in her way.

Currently writing songs for an upcoming album by Grammy-award winning singer Colbie Caillat, on Universal Republic Records, Smerek recently released her debut music video, “Dangerous.”

Smerek’s approach to pop-music writing is youthful and energetic, but what stands out most is an uncommonly mature and creative ear for melody and hook.

According to Caillat’s father/producer, the legendary multi-Grammy winner Ken Caillat, Smerek is a talent to be watched.

“She radiates a beauty and confidence,” says Caillat. “Her songs show a maturity and yet maintain her youthful outlook on life. Callaghan Smerek is the best young singer/songwriter I have met in several decades.”

Official “Dangerous” music video:

Written by Smerek, “Dangerous” feature a string arrangement by award-winning composer Dan Zank and piano by Jonah Kanter, who performed in Justin Bieber’s band. Like her tens of thousands of other Twitter and Facebook fans, Kanter found his way to Smerek’s music through social media and was instantly hooked.

“At first, it was about the song for me,” says Kanter. “The arrangement [of ‘Dangerous’] reminded me of a simple McCartney/Beatles ballad, while the vocals seemed to be done up by a more mature sounding Taylor Swift. I was really impressed when I learned how young Callaghan was.”

A natural-born performer, Smerek already knows her way around a music studio, as well as in front of a camera. Last year she was the voice behind the persistent ditty “Pookie Bear” in a Wendy’s commercial. She also recorded commercials for such notable brands as Disney and Kraft/Lunchables. Her Kraft spot was a piece written by Joy Williams from the Grammy-winning band The Civil Wars.

In addition to her advertising work, Smerek sang backup on Bob Seger’s recording of “Just Passin’ Through,” and was also considered for roles in the movies “True Grit” and “Trust.”

A second video, “Hey You,” was recently produced in New York City and is currently pending release.
