This morning, the Spirit of Detroit was dressed in a Tigers uniform to celebrate their American League pennant and a spot in the 2006 MLB World Series. The Tigers will play the Cardinals beginning on Saturday at Comerica Park. The series will be a rematch for the two teams who played each other in 1968.

Whenever a Detroit sports team celebrates a championship, the Spirit of Detroit statue will wear the team's uniform or jersey. In recent years, the statue has worn the jersey of the Detroit Shock (WNBA), the Detroit Pistons (NBA) and also the Detroit Red Wings (NHL). This was the first time the statue ever wore a Tigers jersey. The jersey is 10 feet wide and 13 feet long. It is made of 100% polyester.

The jersey was placed on the statue at 10:30 a.m. on Friday morning. Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano spoke to public after the jersey was put on. In addition, Christopher Ilitch, President and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc. spoke to the crowd. Larry Alexander, the President and CEO of the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau also addressed the public.

"The Detroit hospitality experience begins as soon as visitors arrive at Metro Airport and that welcoming spirit will spread throughout the city and through the streets of downtown Detroit, for both visitors and local baseball fans," Larry Alexander said.

The Spirit of Detroit statue was designed by Marshall Fredericks. It is 26-feet high and made of bronze. The statue was dedicated in 1958. In it's left hand, the Spirit of Detroit holds a sphere symbolizing the spirit of God while the right hand holds a bronze figurine representing the importance of family.
