It's 87° outside on a Wednesday evening in August. It's sunny, hot and very humid. Tracy Lawrence sits comfortably inside his tour bus with air conditioning just outside the Michigan State Fairgrounds band shell. The country musician would take the stage at 8 p.m.

In 2006, Lawrence started his own record label and called it Rocky Comfort Records. In the past, he was on several different record labels such as Atlantic, Warner Bros., Dreamworks Nashville and Mercury Nashville. Now, he gets to make all the decisions on his own.

"It's going really well," said Lawrence. "We got our licensing and everything cleared in June of last year. Since then, we sold quite a few records and had a number one record this year. We're pretty excited about the way things are going.

"We're currently working our second single, getting ready to do a video on the second single. Getting ready for the holiday buy season. Just trying to get our product placement up."

Lawrence is best known for his songs "Sticks and Stones," "Time Marches On" and the latest number one single "Find Out Who Your Friends Are."

Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney sang with Lawrence in the song "Find Out Who Your Friends Are." All three artists are on separate labels. How did they get together to do such a thing?

"They're friends of mine. I just picked up the phone and called them," said Lawrence.

His current single is "Til I Was a Daddy Too."

Lawrence explains the story behind the song: "It's just about a father's relationship with his son. And starting to see life more through his father's eyes. Really, it's just a relationship that parents have with their children. It's a very special song for me."

The country singer participated in the Lonestar Strike Out for Kids Bowling Bash on June 4, 2007. The third annual fundraiser benefited St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Other stars that also participated included Carrie Underwood, Jake Owen, Blue County, Buddy Jewell, Josh Gracin, Bobby Pinson, among many more. The event raised $16,000.

"It was really good. It was the second year that I've done it. It was a fun event. Very well organized. A lot of celebrities were there. Really cool," said Lawrence.

The country musician has had lots of hit singles. But which of them is his favorite to perform?

"It's hard to narrow it down to just one. I enjoyed quite a few that I've had hits with. I think 'Time Marches On' will always be one of my favorites."

Lawrence released his first album Sticks and Stones in 1991. Since then, he's had 11 other albums on the market. Some of them have been hits, other's haven't been as popular. What are the secrets to making a hit record?

"I think you just try to be as passionate about the music that you make and hope that people gravitate to it. I've had a lot of things that I thought were gonna be really big records that didn't make it very far up the charts and things that I really didn't think much of that did tremendously well. It's just hit and miss."

The country star loves playing in Detroit. He was just here in May at the 25th Anniversary of the Downtown Hoedown.

"It was great. We played the Hoedown many times over the years. Detroit has a huge country fan base. A lot of great country music fans here. It's always a pleasure playing for them."

Tracy Lawrence had some goals that he would like to attain over the next 10 years.

"I hope that my record label has continued to grow. I hope that I have several other artists that are doing well. I hope my tour schedule is cut way back. I see myself being in this business. I see myself continuing to tour to some degree. Continuing to work my record label."

Lawrence will be busy during the fall with performances all across the country. He will return to our state with a performance at the Odawa Casino Resort in Petoskey on November 10th. He also has performances scheduled for early 2008. Looks like he will be a very busy man.
