Local fitness expert offers tips on how to stay on track with your New Year's Weight Loss Resolution

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. -- Jennifer Gray is a fitness expert from metro Detroit. She was voted "Best Personal Trainer" by HOUR Detroit Magazine. Gray is the founder of the Body Beautiful Boot Camp. It is a program designed to help women lose weight. Gray offers six- and 12-week programs at several locations around the tri-county area. Many people set their New Year's resolution to lose weight and become more fit. She offered some advice for people to stay on track all year long.

Gray earned a four-year degree from Oakland University with concentrations in Exercise Physiology and Psychology. She has been certified through the years in the ACE (American Council of Exercise), the AFAA (Aerobic & Fitness Association of America), Exercise Specialists, and kick boxing. The personal trainer is currently certified in group fitness training through the AFAA, and remains current in all significant developments within the disciplines of training, exercise, health, and psychology.

"You need to set reasonable goals," the personal trainer said. "Because if you set yourself up to fail and you're going to achieve too much too quickly, you're going to end up gaining your weight back. You need to stay focused and put it into your daily life."

What can people do to stick to weight loss goals all year long? Some people try it in January, but give up by February and then don't try again.

"The key is you have to be consistent," Gray explained. "There's no quick fix. It's time to incorporate into your life. You need at least three days of cardio a week and at least two days of weight training. In my boot camps, that's what I've incorporated, a minimum of two days that they come. You can do it at home or you can do it in a gym or you can actually join a boot camp or a group class."

Do you think it is necessary to join a fitness club to be successful at losing weight?

"Well, you need that group support," the founder of the Body Beautiful Boot Camp said. "A lot of people do and it's very helpful. They've done studies on it that people actually work out in the morning and have group support get better results. Because you work yourself harder and you've got the other people around you with the same goals. It's what we think about and surround our self with and questions that we ask our self."

Do you think TV shows like The Biggest Loser and some of the fitness DVD's are motivating people to stay more fit?

"Again, the more we surround our self with like minds and that are trying to achieve things, make them self better and always strive to be better, the better off we're going to be," Gray added. "Yes, I do think it is."

How much does it help to have a buddy or group of people with you when exercising or working out?

"Buddying up is the way to be," she explained. "I mean, I have my dog, Duke, an Australian Shepherd, you just met him and he's my workout buddy. But you can have a good friend, a trainer. That group support, the like mind, somebody that's going to tell you, let's just do it. Let's get it done this year."

Please tell me a little about your Body Beautiful Boot Camp and how it's different from some of the other programs out there?

"It's very structured because you're going to keep your body changing," Gray said. "How many times have you been to the gym, you keep going and never change? You need to not pump it up, change it up. That's what we do in the boot camp. We combine the latest and hottest fitness trends like pilates, kick boxing, circuit training and gear it towards different fitness levels. We have women that have 10 pounds to loose, we have women that have 30, 40, up to 100 pounds to loose. Everyone has different needs and we really try to give them the support they need."

We spoke at the Evolution Fitness in West Bloomfield, Mich. However, the fitness expert says she also runs boot camps at other locations around metro Detroit.

"Yes, I am in Royal Oak at the Fitness Unlimited," the personal trainer added. "It's a private program, you don't have to join any of the gyms. Also, we are in Rochester too. The Rochester Gym at Auburn and Rochester Road."

There are different price levels for joining the Body Beautiful Boot Camp.

"It really ranges from $200 up to $600, depending on how long of a program," Gray explained. "It's a whole program that you're getting with a lot of support beyond just the workouts. So it's about $40 per week. It works out to be less than personal training. A lot less and you're getting more support. People find it even more effective."
