DETROIT -- Wayne State University is historically known as a commuter school. University officials are working hard to change that with its on-campus apartments and dorm facilities. WSU offers the Ghafari and Atchison residence halls for freshman students. The university also features the Towers residential suites for sophomores and above. In addition, WSU offers three apartment buildings. This fall, students will be expected to pay another 3 percent on top of already high housing rates.

"We work closely with financial aid to help students get all the financial aid that they’re eligible for and help them make decisions with their room and board," said Tim Michael is the director of housing at Wayne State University. "For some students, living on campus is probably not an option because of cost."

The price increase calculates to $200 more for students living in The Towers and $100 more for students in Ghafari and Atchison halls. Those living in on-campus apartments will pay $30 more per month.

Some students say that the price increase will cause them to move back home.

"In this economy, students can’t afford those raises. With things like the Michigan Promise Scholarship being taken away, it’s detrimental to students and this university and learning," said student Keely Czartorski. "By making housing more expensive, you’re losing money for education."

"I think the price is a little higher because we’re not supposed to live here during the vacation we’re in," said student Cherry Dai. "I think it will be hard. My roommate, just moved out cause she couldn’t afford it."

Other students say they will continue to live in the on-campus housing facilities, despite the rate increase.

Adham Rajab is a sophomore student at WSU. He said he will remain living at the DeRoy Apartments next fall.

"The building is very quiet and very nice," Rajab said.

Beginning this fall, all of the meal plan prices are going down, except for one.

Three of the meal plans being offered will go down by $100 each. However, the price is going up for the 10-meal plan. It calculates to $400 more per semester.

"We’ve created a new dining plan called the Warrior Pass, which will give students unlimited access to the dining halls anytime during our operations," Michael said.

Wayne State University is on its way to becoming a campus where more of its students live instead of just being a commuter school. However, some students have to choose between the education and the housing and the winner is the education.
