DETROIT
-- Smoothies are popping
up everywhere as the temperatures continue to rise. Five restaurants
are now selling these healthy and nutritious drinks on the Wayne
State University (WSU) campus: LaPita Mediterranean Grille on Cass
Avenue, Byblo’s Café on Cass Avenue, Epicurus Place
on Warren Avenue and McDonalds inside the student center. Freshens
Restaurant opened its doors two months ago. It is located on the
first floor of the Towers Residential Suites.
Don Kahn
is the director of food services at The Towers.
"We’re doing smoothies, fat-free frozen yogurt and then
also granola," Kahn said. "In addition to that, we have
the fresh market, which offers sandwiches, soups, and then we also
have Hershey’s ice cream."
Some students say they welcome the addition of Freshens to the campus
community.
"This place is definitely worth while to check out to make
healthier choices than eating fast food all the time," said
student Cindy Walkush.
Another popular place for smoothies is LaPita Mediterranean Grille.
It has been open since 2006.
General
Manager Maria Tabou says the opening of Freshens has not affected
business at LaPita.
"I don’t think it has at all," Tabou said. "I
think on our end, because we offer food, it brings a different clientele
in too."
Some students say that LaPita is great because of its location and
its Mediterranean cuisine.
"If I’m getting a smoothie, then I won’t be able
to get my yummy shawama," said student Khizran Ali. "So
that’s why I stick with either or and I usually go for the
shawarma so smoothies are out."
There’s nothing like a cool smoothie on a warm day. Wayne
State students and faculty now have many choices of where to get
one. For now, the smoothie wars continue.
