BROOKLYN,
Mich. –To pay tribute to the lives of his famous
grandfather and father and to recognize the three generations of
Earnhardt racing tradition, Earnhardt Jr. will unveil a special
paint scheme honoring his famous family for the June 18 running
of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series 3M Performance 400 presented by
Post-it® Picture Paper at Michigan International Speedway. The
special Father’s Day design is based upon the No. 8 cars driven
by grandfather Ralph Earnhardt and father Dale Earnhardt during
their NASCAR careers.
The cream-colored car, Earnhardt Jr.’s second tribute car
of the 2006 season, will feature the bow-tie Budweiser logos that
were first used in 1956, when Ralph Earnhardt won the title in the
NASCAR Sportsman Division - the predecessor to the modern-day NASCAR
Busch Series. Earnhardt Jr.’s first tribute car of the season,
fielded at Talladega, was painted black as an homage to his late
father, Dale Earnhardt Sr.
“I love that era, and I like the look of the car,” said
Earnhardt Jr. “If I can’t go back in time and race in
the 1950s, at least I can drive a car that looks like it’s
from the ’50s. I’ve always liked bold, simple paint
schemes, and it’ll be cool to drive a car that looks so similar
to what my dad and grandpa drove.”
Ralph Earnhardt drove the No. 8 to six top-10 finishes in the NASCAR
Sportsman point standings and more than 350 NASCAR wins. While most
associate Dale Earnhardt Sr. with the No. 3 car, it was the No.
8 that he drove before his entry into NASCAR’s premier series
in 1975.
The Earnhardts have a long history of racing success at MIS. Earnhardt
Jr. won a NASCAR Busch Series race in 1999 and has made 18 starts
at the two-mile oval dating back to 1997 in the NEXTEL Cup, Busch,
and International Race of Champions series. Earnhardt Sr., a veteran
of 63 MIS starts from 1979 to 2000, won two races in both the NEXTEL
Cup Series and IROC. On August 20, 2000, Earnhardt Jr., Earnhardt
Sr. and Kerry Earnhardt all raced in the NASCAR Cup Series race
at MIS. It was the only time in history that all three raced together
in NASCAR competition. They finished 31st, 6th and 43rd, respectively.
With this feat, the Earnhardt family became the first since August
1960 to field three drivers for a Cup race.
