2005 Pole Winner: Ryan Newman, alltel Dodge, 194.232
mph, 37.069 seconds. (new MIS qualifying record)
2005 Race Winner: Greg Biffle, Charter-National
Guard Ford, 150.596 mph, 2 hours, 39 minutes, 22 seconds.
2005 Race Recap: Greg Biffle drove the competition
batty at Michigan International Speedway on June 19, 2005 as he
won the Batman Begins 400 for his fifth win of the season and second
consecutive win at MIS. Team owner Jack Roush saw three of his other
drivers finish in the top five. Mark Martin was third, followed
by Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards. Tony Stewart broke up the Roush
Racing reign with a second-place finish for Joe Gibbs Racing. Biffle
led for a total of 63 laps, but was able to run Stewart down every
time he would gain the lead. Biffle inherited the lead from Stewart
for the final time with 31 laps remaining in the race and never
relinquished the advantage again. The last of four caution flags
came out with 31 laps remaining. Stewart pitted for four tires and
fuel while Biffle and the other Roush drivers stayed out. It was
a gamble that paid off. Ryan Newman captured the pole with a new
track record of 194.232 mph. The old record was held by Dale Earnhardt
Jr. in 2000 (191.149 mph). It was the 29th consecutive NASCAR NEXTEL
Cup sellout at MIS, dating back to 1991.

You Know...3M Performance 400 Facts |
… Michigan International
Speedway has hosted a NASCAR race in June every year since 1969.
In the one year that MIS hosted one NASCAR race – 1973 –
the race took place in June. The 3M Performance 400 will be the
74th NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at MIS.
… There have been 11 different winners in the last 13 NASCAR
NEXTEL Cup Series races at MIS. The winners include: 2005- Jeremy
Mayfield, Greg Biffle; 2004- Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman; 2003- Ryan
Newman, Kurt Busch; 2002- Dale Jarrett, Matt Kenseth; 2001-Sterling
Marlin, Jeff Gordon; 2000- Rusty Wallace, Tony Stewart; 1999- Bobby
Labonte (August). Will there be a different winner in 2006?
… For the last two June races, the winner of the previous
year’s August race has emerged victorious. August 2003 winner
Ryan Newman prevailed in June 2004, and Greg Biffle repeated his
August 2004 win in June 2005. Is the August 2005 race winner Jeremy
Mayfield the next to repeat?
… The pole position has been the most productive starting
position at MIS in NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series competition, producing
14 race winners in 73 total races.
… If you don’t win the pole, you may want to start fourth
at MIS. Since NASCAR’s top series began racing at MIS in 1969,
12 drivers have won races starting from the fourth position. The
most recent winner from the fourth spot was Ryan Newman in the June
2004 NEXTEL Cup event. Just eight drivers have won from both the
second and third starting positions in MIS history.
… Since the 3M Performance 400 has been a NASCAR Father’s
Day tradition for years, it’s only appropriate to talk about
historical father/son combinations. Richard and Kyle Petty ran together
on Father’s Day eight times, the first of which was June 15,
1980 as Richard finished fifth and Kyle finished behind his dad
in seventh place. Richard and Kyle have competed in the June race
at MIS 12 different times, with Kyle finishing higher than Dad six
out of the 12 times. In August of 2000, Dale Earnhardt and his sons
Kerry and Dale Jr. all drove in the Cup race at MIS, which was the
first and only time all three competed together in a NASCAR event.
… The winner of the June event at MIS has gone on to win the
NASCAR NEXTEL Cup championship seven times since the track’s
first NASCAR race in 1969. The list includes Richard Petty (1974),
Cale Yarborough (1977, 1978), Dale Earnhardt (1987, 1990), Dale
Jarrett (1999), and most recently, Jeff Gordon in 2001 when he passed
Ricky Rudd on the last lap to win.
… In August 1981, there were nine caution flags during the
race, which set an MIS record. Since then, the record has been tied
in three of MIS’s last six races. The yellow flag came out
nine times in June 2003 and in both Cup races in 2004. Eight caution
flags came out in August 2003.
… Don’t look for one car make to dominate the 3M Performance
400. In the backyard of the automotive capital of the world, no
manufacturer has swept the top five finishing positions in the June
race at MIS, although Ford came close with four of the top five
last season.
… Recently, Ford and Dodge have combined to win the last nine
NEXTEL Cup races at MIS. Ford has taken five checkered flags and
Dodge four since June 2001, when Jeff Gordon won with a Chevrolet.
Sterling Marlin’s August victory in 2001 at MIS was the first
time a Dodge won a Cup event since 1977.
