BROOKLYN,
Mich. -- Michigan International Speedway will
host a special post-race concert featuring the pop/rock
band Smash Mouth following the CARFAX 250 NASCAR Busch
Series event Saturday, Aug. 18. The concert will be presented
by the SPEED Channel.
Smash Mouth
first came onto the music scene in 1997 with the release
of "Walkin' on the Sun" from their self-made
debut "Fush Yung Mang," which sold more than
two million copies. However, it was 1999's Astro Lounge
that truly set the pop pinnacle. The lead single "All-Star"
topped three national radio charts and hit number four
on Billboard's perennial Hot 100. The group's self-titled
third album featured "I'm a Believer," featured
in the film "Shrek." The group also released
"Get the Picture?" in 2003, the greatest hits
album "All Star: The Smash Hits in 2005," and
their fifth studio album "Summer Girl" released
in fall 2006.
"Having
a huge act like Smash Mouth perform for our loyal race
fans is a great opportunity for us to say 'thank-you'
for their support throughout the 2007 race season,"
track President Roger Curtis said. "The weekend will
be an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our fans, giving
fans an affordable way to see great racing and an awesome
concert makes all the hard work worth it."
The band is
no stranger to NASCAR, as lead singer Steve Harwell is
an avid enthusiast of the sport. "I'm a huge race
fanatic," Harwell said in a 2005 interview with NASCAR.com.
"If I wasn't doing music, I'd be driving a race car
or working with a race team. I've always been a gear head."
Fans that have
purchased tickets to the CARFAX 250 Busch Series race,
which in the past has featured many NEXTEL Cup Series
stars such as Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards,
and defending race winner Dale Earnhardt Jr., may use
their ticket stubs for gate admission to the post-race
concert outside Turns One and Two featuring a band which
has sold over 5.5 million albums in the United States.
With the purchase
of a $50 ticket for the CARFAX 250, with children 12 and
under admitted free, fans will be in store for an event
filled day with two NEXTEL Cup Series practices, Busch
Series qualifying, the CARFAX 250 featuring many NEXTEL
Cup regulars, and a concert by the hit music group Smash
Mouth.
On the NASCAR
front, Smash Mouth has been an active fixture throughout
the sport. The band performed at the 2003 NASCAR Busch
Series awards ceremony, was an active participant in the
2005 NASCAR Day celebration, was featured on the soundtrack
for "NASCAR 3D: The IMAX Experience," and has
visited and performed at many tracks on the NASCAR circuit.
