EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- If you are going to the game on Sunday, bundle up and go early. The official pre-party in East Rutherford will go by the name of Meadowlands Tailgate Party. Who knew?

Prices are dropping for hotel rooms. Out-of-town football fans looking for a place to stay this weekend are in luck. Hotels primed for Super Bowl Sunday are putting out “Vacancy” signs and room prices are dropping faster than the cold temperature.

“New Jersey did not fare well,” said Mark Giangiulio, general manager of the Grand Hotel in Summit. He is also chairman of the New Jersey Hotel and Lodging Association and a member of the state Super Bowl planning committee. “We didn’t get the windfall we all thought.”

Over the past several days, hotel rates have skidded downhill. Rooms within a 3.7-mile radius of MetLife Stadium are going for about $247 a night, a drop of nearly $100 since Friday alone, according to online data. About 45 percent of those hotels still have vacancies.

As of Monday, rooms at the Hilton Meadowlands — less than a mile from the stadium — were still available for $386 a night, taxes included, for a three-night stay, according to its website. Despite its proximity to the stadium, Hilton guests cannot take a hotel shuttle to the Super Bowl, but must use NJ Transit or a pre-ticketed coach bus system, like other game day fans.

Even Jersey City, where the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks are staying, and nearby Union City have 31 percent vacancy rates at an average of $250 a night.
